“Avoid. Great view but terrible service, worse food.”
Looking around with a group of friends to find a decent spot to eat, we found the Uilenspiegel. They moved 2 guests to a different table so we could sit. (A group of 10 people). It then took 30 minutes to take our drink order and another 15 to serve it. (Some sodas and beer, nothing fancy). We should have taken that as a warning. We stayed however because we were exhausted from a busy and hot day.
Five people ordered a starter, the soup of the day, tomato soup. Two of them had a fly in it. Not on top, but buried in the soup. That means the flies are in the pot in the kitchen. The waiter came and tried to blame us for the flies. We refused to eat the tainted soup and we had it removed from the bill. When the main course arrived the trouble wasn't over. One of the mixed grills had raw chicken. Both the spareribs orders were bland and incredible chewy, as if they were microwaved before serving. The mussels tasted terrible and were way to watery and no sauce or dip was served. The mayonnaise was served in closed plastic cups of which 2 out of 3 cups were oily and had gone bad due to most likely leaving them in the sun. The fries were certainly not freshly fried.
When confronted the waiter with our problems he started to argue with us. The mayo was delivered to the restaurant in that state, the chicken was fine to eat cause you don't get sick if it's pink, all their spareribs were freshly grilled and they were not responsible for buying bad mussels. After a small discussion he agreed to clear 1 mixed grill and serve us all coffee. In our eyes this was not nearly good enough but we didn't want to waste more time. The most annoying of it all was that he never admitted that it was their fault. He kept making excuses instead of accepting that he had served us multiple bad meals. He left the table and vanished for another 25 minutes until we had enough and told him to leave the coffee and bring the bill. The whole ordeal took us almost 2.5 hours in total.
One fly in the soup is possible and could happen everywhere. Two fly-filled soups out of 5 is extremely, extremely unlikely. But when they serve 10 main courses of which there were problems with 5, you've got a terrible, terrible kitchen. If it was busy we would perhaps have understood that things go wrong when you're in a rush. But the restaurant was half empty when our main course came.
The service overall was one of the worst I had come across since a few years and the food was, however unlikely the possibility, worse.
I will never visit their restaurant again and I cringe at the thought of the state of their rooms and beds given our experience.
I later heard that it used to be a good restaurant but there had been a change of management. That seems to have been for the worse.
