We first stayed at this Campanile about eight years ago when it was a family-run establishment with a memorable "rustic" decor and very good "country cooking" menus. This time, for a two day break to visit Bruges, we found it to have an additional annexe dining room and a totally revamped reception area and original dining area (although the old iron chimney piece remains).
The recent reviews fully describe the rooms, the very friendly staff and everything the current establishment offers, but a "hotel" it isn't, despite the large name displayed in neon lighting on the outside of the building. This is very much a motel, suitable for a comfortable night's stay in a modern simply furnished room, but any expected standard hotel assistance is lacking.
We asked about an evening meal in the dining room when we arrived at reception and were recommended to wait until the "large group" had finished before we ate. This we duly did and chose the Chef's Special, a cordon bleu pork cutlet in a sauce served with a few pieces of carrot and potato croquettes (usually to be found in supermarket frozen food displays). The dessert counter offerred very little choice after the "large group" had left.
On the second day, after that lengthy walk into the city centre and a taxi back, we expected to be able to manage the few final steps to the dining room for another simple meal but the "large group" had become two large groups and we were curtly told that the restaurant was full and we would be unable to eat there throughout the entire evening. The fact that we too were also guests at the place made no difference whatsoever. After a long day's walking in the city centre we were too tired to venture far but found a fast food outlet along the road for a chicken burger and frites.
Overall our recent visit back to this Campanile turned out to be a very disappointing occasion.
