“A hidden gem providing great service in an excellent location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2010

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights over november/december 2010 and were extremely impressed. We have stayed in Bruges many times invariably at the Best Western Navarra which although nice is quite pricey. The Karel de stoute hotel however is as nice and in as good a location for a third of the price - how do they do it? The owners were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. Breakfast was more than sufficient and in a beautiful dining room. There are only 9 bedrooms but it doesn't seem tiny. Towels were changed every day. We have no complaints whatsoever. We would definitely stay again and recommend it highly.

“Fantastic hotel with excellent friendly owner and location is perfect!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2010

What a fantastic long weekend we had at this hotel/B&B. Perfect location being central yet just off the beaten track so lovely and quiet. It is a perfect little hotel/B&B Id recommend to all. Decor is lovely, and bar downstairs is just georgous. Owners, Daphne and Winke are really lovely. Winke (who happens to speak all languages fluently! ) directed us to several places to eat and we werent disappointed once. Bruges is a beautiful place and we had the most amazing weekend. ........Grateful thanks to Winke, he has such a sense of humour ...his breakfasts were gorg too. A gem of a place to which one day we will return!

“Good Budget Hotel, But Mind the Stairs”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2010

This is clearly a budget hotel and is really overdue for some work, but it suited our needs just fine. On the map it doesn't look central, but it is only a five minute walk from Market Square and away from the noise. The breakfast was good with bread, cheese, meat, and cereal. I had a large room on the top floor. It had a queen size bed, table and a couch. The two windows started near the floor and there were no screens, so opening the windows for any reason requires caution. My bathroom had a tub and a hand held shower head, but no curtain, so showering required good dexterity to avoid soaking the whole bathroom. Also, mind the stairs! The carpeted stairs from the lobby to the first floor are steep and the top step is slanted down. The stairs to the second floor are very steep, narrow, and a bit rickety.

If you are on a budget and don't mind the drawbacks, this is a decent place to stay in a good location.

“Great local establishment with tasty breakfast, kind manager”

This hotel can boast an interesting history (was formerly owned by either Charles the Bold or a relative), a nice breakfast, lovely wooden touches, nice rooms, and a great manager.

We stayed during the ash crisis so things were quiet, and the hotel staff took time to answer all of our questions about the surrounding area, sights to see, food to try. We also received a call on the night of our stay to confirm our arrival.

Location is great, price was good, and I wouldn't have picked a different place!!

“Dreadful room”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 April 2010

My daughter and I booked in for one night at the Hotel Karel de Stoute, thank Goodness. The room was so awful that we walked around in the pouring rain until 11pm so we didn't have to return to it. The only reason we stayed was because we had only booked for one night and the sheets were clean. The room was on the top floor and had been furnished as cheaply as possible. There was a turquoise laminate makeshift headboard with 2 (not matching) cheap lights, one of which was not working, and there was a small pine table which was the only place to put anything. At the end of the bed was the door to the shower room. The bathroom tiles had been painted over to hide the mould, but you could still see it in the grouting, and there were lots of other stains also. The towels, were supposed to be white but were actually grey with badly frayed edges. There was a bit of a net curtain stretched out across the window which didn't fit. It was so awful that we pulled it back as it was better to see the roof top facing. The thing that concerned me most was that the window was very low, and could be opened really wide, and had no lock. Any child staying in this room could easily have opened it and fallen out. The room was very musty and very sparse and another cause for concern was that we had an adjoining door to the next room which was not locked. Most worrying thing of all is the room keys are the same and fit ALL the room doors,, so there is no security. As we were going up the stairs we noticed that on each landing there was a small table with a wicker basket on. In each basket was a small, and not too clean, travel hairdryer - so much for "hairdryers supplied". The final staircase had very narrow treads and were rickety, and we had to carry our cases up which was very difficult. Our stay included breakfast which my daughter didn't want to risk. As we had paid for it, I suggested that coffee and cereal would be safe. However, when we went for breakfast we were very pleasantly surprised. The dining room was old and lovely and the breakfast was really good. The location of the hotel was very good also, but no way would we ever stay there again, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone either.
My daughter and I are not fussy people, however, the photographs speak for themselves.
