My daughter and I booked in for one night at the Hotel Karel de Stoute, thank Goodness. The room was so awful that we walked around in the pouring rain until 11pm so we didn't have to return to it. The only reason we stayed was because we had only booked for one night and the sheets were clean. The room was on the top floor and had been furnished as cheaply as possible. There was a turquoise laminate makeshift headboard with 2 (not matching) cheap lights, one of which was not working, and there was a small pine table which was the only place to put anything. At the end of the bed was the door to the shower room. The bathroom tiles had been painted over to hide the mould, but you could still see it in the grouting, and there were lots of other stains also. The towels, were supposed to be white but were actually grey with badly frayed edges. There was a bit of a net curtain stretched out across the window which didn't fit. It was so awful that we pulled it back as it was better to see the roof top facing. The thing that concerned me most was that the window was very low, and could be opened really wide, and had no lock. Any child staying in this room could easily have opened it and fallen out. The room was very musty and very sparse and another cause for concern was that we had an adjoining door to the next room which was not locked. Most worrying thing of all is the room keys are the same and fit ALL the room doors,, so there is no security. As we were going up the stairs we noticed that on each landing there was a small table with a wicker basket on. In each basket was a small, and not too clean, travel hairdryer - so much for "hairdryers supplied". The final staircase had very narrow treads and were rickety, and we had to carry our cases up which was very difficult. Our stay included breakfast which my daughter didn't want to risk. As we had paid for it, I suggested that coffee and cereal would be safe. However, when we went for breakfast we were very pleasantly surprised. The dining room was old and lovely and the breakfast was really good. The location of the hotel was very good also, but no way would we ever stay there again, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone either.
My daughter and I are not fussy people, however, the photographs speak for themselves.
