“a fairly average hotel...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

I have just come back from a very cold trip to Bruges (not, of course, all the hotel's fault!). It has a great location and very friendly and helpful staff, but the room was cold (one small radiator under one of the two windows). We asked and they gave us an extra quilt though. Also, no tea and coffee making facilities in the room. Breakfast was good though (nice mini choc croissants) and location very central.

Room Tip: don't have room 140 on the corner! Too cold!

“A cold shower”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

Excellent location in the heart of Brugges. Deborah on the desk is very helpful with restaurant suggestions and getting discounts at the Dali exhibition. Breakfast is good continental affair and rooms good. Biggest problem was the hot water. Or lack off. None of the 5 of us staying could bear to shower on the last day it was so cold! Apart from that excellent. Especially at £57 per person per night based on single occupancy

“Nice basic hotel in town centre”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

This is no thrill very basic hotel in a very good location just around a corner from a main square...

Staff at the hotel are very nice and polite. They also serve good breakfast.

If I was to travel to Bruges again I would stay in this hotel again...

“Fine for a couple of nights but no big deal!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

We stayed for a couple of nights between Christmas and New year. Its main attraction is its very central to everything and very good value.

2 mins from the car park (which is great if you are driving there).

First impressions, looks ok from the outside, welcoming and clean. Receptionist spoke very good English which is always a help and she was very helpful - told us all we needed to know to enjoy our stay.

The room was ok. It was clean and overlooked the street. We were not disturbed by any late night noise but were on the 3rd floor. Lift to all floors. Bed was very soft - nearly rolled out a couple of times in the night lol!

Bathroom - had a bath and a shower. The door didnt close properly which could be embrassing in certain situations. There was a shower screen but unfortunately did not reach as far as the shower resulting in water all over the floor. We tried to position the shower so this didnt happen but ......

The Bar. When they say it closes as 11pm it closes at 11pm! It is comfortable to sit in and again the staff are excellent. But there was no lemonde or orange juice for mixers. It was almost an after thought. Be warned you have to pay in cash at time of ordering - no room tab.

Smoking. There was a courtyard to smoke in if you didnt want to stand in the street.

Breakfast. Ticked all the boxes. All the usual stuff plus bacon and scrambled eggs.

Checkout. Fast and again the receptionist was very helpful assisting us with directions for our next port of call.

I would stay here again because of the price and the location. I may choose somewhere else if I was staying for a a week or more but its more than adequate for a few nights.

“Perfect City Centre Hotel….provided you are a heavy sleeper!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

It is such a shame to only give this hotel a 3 as it really is lovely – clean, full of character, helpful Reception, perfect central location….but unfortunately the situation of our room (309, 'small standard room') meant that we overlooked the street that had lots of noisy bars where you could hear the music and people shouting and singing till past 4 am so we struggled to sleep….and we had been out until 2.30 am ourselves and had sampled many Belgian beers so were likely to fall asleep as soon as our heads hit the pillow! Upon checkout we mentioned the noise and asked if there were some rooms that weren’t affected by the noise. The receptionist (Deborah – very helpful) told us that there are rooms on the other side of the hotel (opposite side to the road/bar area) which no-one has ever complained about the noise from that side. Maybe it is best to ask for these rooms.

Of course the major plus is that the hotel is right in the centre, 2 minute walk to the Markt and the Belfry and on the doorstep to lots of nice bars/clubs. (Bars situated from the hotel right through to the Markt square). Upon our arrival at 11 am, our room was ready which was fantastic as we expected to have to leave our case in a luggage room until later on that day. Check-in is not officially until 2 pm so it was good that they let us in the room earlier.

Bathroom was very clean with toiletries to use. Shower was very good. Bed was comfortable; linen was nice, clean and fresh. There was a minibar in the room (although we didn’t use it) which was a nice touch. Our room had a nice view of the Belfry over the rooftops which was lovely.

Breakfast was good although make sure you get there well before 10. They say it is served until 10 am but when we got there at 9.40 am there was no tea, eggs or bacon left. I asked the waitress and she reluctantly asked the kitchen to make some more eggs which they did. There was no more bacon or tea though which for a hotel with a lot of English guests was not very good but there was plenty of toast, ham, cheese, breads, croissants, cakes, cereals, and juices to choose from though so we were happy with breakfast.

Overall, a lovely hotel but unfortunately its situation is a bit too near the bars so beware if you are a light sleeper. We loved Bruges (absolutely beautiful at Christmas) and will definitely return – to Hans Memling? Probably not – there are many other hotels in the same price range - had there been no disturbance in the night, we would without hesitation but because of this, we wouldn’t want to chance it again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room the opposite side to the street if possible i.e. no noise
