It is such a shame to only give this hotel a 3 as it really is lovely – clean, full of character, helpful Reception, perfect central location….but unfortunately the situation of our room (309, 'small standard room') meant that we overlooked the street that had lots of noisy bars where you could hear the music and people shouting and singing till past 4 am so we struggled to sleep….and we had been out until 2.30 am ourselves and had sampled many Belgian beers so were likely to fall asleep as soon as our heads hit the pillow! Upon checkout we mentioned the noise and asked if there were some rooms that weren’t affected by the noise. The receptionist (Deborah – very helpful) told us that there are rooms on the other side of the hotel (opposite side to the road/bar area) which no-one has ever complained about the noise from that side. Maybe it is best to ask for these rooms.
Of course the major plus is that the hotel is right in the centre, 2 minute walk to the Markt and the Belfry and on the doorstep to lots of nice bars/clubs. (Bars situated from the hotel right through to the Markt square). Upon our arrival at 11 am, our room was ready which was fantastic as we expected to have to leave our case in a luggage room until later on that day. Check-in is not officially until 2 pm so it was good that they let us in the room earlier.
Bathroom was very clean with toiletries to use. Shower was very good. Bed was comfortable; linen was nice, clean and fresh. There was a minibar in the room (although we didn’t use it) which was a nice touch. Our room had a nice view of the Belfry over the rooftops which was lovely.
Breakfast was good although make sure you get there well before 10. They say it is served until 10 am but when we got there at 9.40 am there was no tea, eggs or bacon left. I asked the waitress and she reluctantly asked the kitchen to make some more eggs which they did. There was no more bacon or tea though which for a hotel with a lot of English guests was not very good but there was plenty of toast, ham, cheese, breads, croissants, cakes, cereals, and juices to choose from though so we were happy with breakfast.
Overall, a lovely hotel but unfortunately its situation is a bit too near the bars so beware if you are a light sleeper. We loved Bruges (absolutely beautiful at Christmas) and will definitely return – to Hans Memling? Probably not – there are many other hotels in the same price range - had there been no disturbance in the night, we would without hesitation but because of this, we wouldn’t want to chance it again.
Room Tip: Ask for a room the opposite side to the street if possible i.e. no noise
