I recently spent the weekend in the beautiful but VERY cold Ghent. I am anxious to visit again in better weather and will definately stay at the Marriott again. The city is quite small and the Marriott is well positioned within a short 10 minute walk of almost everything. I booked for 2 nights at a very good rate on the Marriott website. All of the staff were very friendly - from the check-in to the bar staff. While the room furnishings were quite consistent with what you would expect from a Marriott, the rooms were large and very clean. As the front of the hotel that faces the canal is small, there must be very few rooms with a canal view. My room looked into another building directly across a small side street.
I have to admit I didn't eat at the hotel, except for a drink at the bar, which was quite busy. There are so many unique places in Ghent to dine and drink, that, while convenient, I wasn't going to spend much time in the hotel lobby.
I would recommend researching ahead and making reservations at the restaurants you want to dine in - we stopped in many places that were completely booked for lunch and dinner. It seemed more like NYC than Ghent, being told that the wait was a couple of hours or that they were fully booked.
Overall, highly recommended and looking forward to a return trip to Ghent.
