“fine for the price”

We went to Ghent to meet a very nice couple who had our daughter's camera - it's a long story-
and decided to make a mini romantic break of it: just the two of us, Myles and me. We crossed early morning with the lorries, and it was a short drive from Dunkirk to Ghent.
The Flandria is in two narrow Flemish style houses in a small side street near the central squares, To reach our room we had to ascend a steep, narrow and winding staircase to a little room in the loft, with a Velux window looking out on to a cathedral! During the night there was a phenomenal storm, and we were entertained by repeated flashes of lightning over the cathedral.
There was a small but adequate shower and toilet built into a corner, and the bed was comfortable enough. There was very little room to move around, but as a base for a one night stay it was fine. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was a mediocre buffet, but there was plenty of food available. All in all, good value, basic accommodation near the centre of Ghent, with parking nearby and pleasant staff.

“Not too impressed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2011

I spent one night at hotel Flandria in Mid-September. The room was a bit old and infested with mosquitos. The receptionist was kind enough to offer a plug-in insect killer upon request. Breakfast was decent, however the slice bread was molded.
The positive side of the hotel is the location: quiet street and yet very central.

“Perfection at it's cheapest!”

I went to Gent for 2 days to do some sightseeing with family. I searched on the internet for the cheapest hotel in the centre. That was clearly Flandria hotel.

Based on the mixed reviews I expected an all right hotel, but only fine for it's price. The hotel actually turned out to be 100% perfect though. I honestly can not name a single downside. We were nicely welcomed. Could check in even though we arrived quite early. Rooms were fine, nice beds, good bathroom, windows that can be opened. Very silent and also charming hotel. It has something cosy, it's very own character, nothing like such a modern hotel that you can find anywhere in the world. So you do have to like that.

I had read some bad things about breakfast. So when we arrived in the morning in the, pleasant, breakfast area and I saw that the basket with the more luxury sandwiches was almost empty I expected that it would not be replenished. But just a moment later a new basked arrived with the most lovely sandwiches imaginable, right from the oven. There was also a fine choice in good quality spreads, cheese, ham, etc.
No exaggeration: amazingly tasty breakfast!

The hotel is just a 2 minute walk from the St. Baafs cathedral and the Belfort. So it's basicly in the centre of Gent.

In short: this hotel is not only absolutely perfect for it's low price. It can also firmly hold it's ground in comparison to much more expensive hotels.
You're going to visit Gent? I would say: book a room in Flandria Hotel, no matter what your budget is!

“Nice hotel, small rooms but warm and comfortable. Stairs steep, quite narrow, no lift. Decent breakfast included.”

We stayed two nights for just under £121. Parking is about 5 minutes walk away, around £17.50 for two days. Very well situated near city centre, 5-10 minutes walk at average pace. Have previously stayed in Ghent at 3 different Accor Hotels, this is less well appointed but has more character and the smaller staff team are personable and helpful. Check in time is given as 16:00 but as the room was ready we were allowed to check in at 15:00. The continental breakfast was plentiful, enjoyable and included in the price. In a very narrow street (it is Ghent after all) so be ready to get luggage out of car pretty promptly; the street is not busy but has occasional traffic which you are likely to block if you hang about.

“Definitely wouldn't stay here again.”

The plus points of this place are (racking my brain): It IS very central. It is cheap-ish. I really cant think of anything else. On arrival, the woman at reception was quite rude to us and it kind of went downhill from there. The rooms are dated beyond belief although the sheets were clean. I felt like I was staying in some sort of caravan. For 70 euros I didnt really expect style or luxury but I expected a hot shower and a decent nights sleep and I didn't get either. We couldn't get any hot water for love nor money and we woken up approximately 5 or 6 times in the night by students coming in at 5, 6 and 7am, very loudly. Not to mention the tapping noise which I assume were pipes. They nearly drove me insane. At 8:30am we woke up, and checked out as quickly as possible, after eating the most basic, tasteless breakfast I'd ever had. Not even a croissant. I never want to stay here again.
