Let me start by complimenting the new management as of 2012. They are brothers and are clearly interested in making the guests welcome as they implement some changes. I was impressed with their willingness to help me find my way around the city, and when they learned I would be back in the area, they offered to purchase local tram tickets for me in advance on account. This was nice and totally unexpected from a more budget-oriented hotel.
The hotel itself was OK. Location was great, as it is on a quiet side street close to the Sint Pieters train station and the tram to the old city center. The room was a good size and the furnishings/bedding were typical. The towels had seen a bit too much wear, but I will assume that they are still in the process of upgrading. Breakfast was included and there was a good selection of cold offerings along with eggs on request.
There were two main problems with the hotel, however, that you should be aware of if you are considering it. First, the wireless internet, while free, was very inadequate. I was unable to use skype as the bandwidth (shared by other customers of course) simply would not support it. Even checking email or browsing the web was difficult due to dropped connections. They really need to upgrade this if they are going to attract business travelers.
The second was mentioned in the previous review, and I take it as further evidence that the management is new ... and not just to this hotel. I had an early morning departure (6:45 train) and was assured that 'someone will be here by 6' and that 'just come 15 minutes early and there will be breakfast'. Imagine my surprise when I got off the elevator at 6:10 into a tiny entry hall with an anti-burgler screen between me and the rest of the hotel. This was the 'after hours arrival' area mentioned previously. I was unable either to have my breakfast or even to check out of the hotel. I ended up going back upstairs to leave the key in the room and then just leaving the hotel. Fortunately for them, the room was already paid for. Whether this is failure to communicate among themselves, failure to remember (or write down) special requests/commitments or what, it is something that needs to change or it will discourage repeat visitors.
