“Basic but Atmospheric and Romantic”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

Conference accommodation usually involves annonymous boxes within boxes run by familiar names. Erasmus' webite offered an escape I was only too keen to take (and about 10e cheaper than the offcial conference hotel). Following a knock on the heavy wooden door I walked back 400 years. Worth staying just to enjoy the feeling of entering a Merchant house from a (not too) busy street. Facilities are very basic but there is a lovely drawing room to sit and read, and oil paintings abound. My single room was dark and small but clean and comfortable and I loved it! Breakfast was a simple buffet. Really this hotel should only be a 3/5 but if, like me, you are a romantic at heart, it is a very good value 4. Sadly the suit of armour is a replica.

“Delightful and atmospheric building - ground floor room dark and dusty!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2011

This is a very atmospheric hotel with a delightful knot garden viewed from the breakfast room. I stayed for one night with a friend who had left his wallet behind, we realised, when we were waiting to get back on Eurostar in Brussels, The receptionist was a bit diffident about disturbing the new guests in my friends room but did so and very helpfully arranged for the wallet to be sent back to London recorded delivery. The ground floor room I had was atmospheric but very dusty - needed a bit of a blitz. Also very dark as it faces out into a subterranean cellar area - it could do with some nice subdued lighting in the room as the top light was too bright and the side lamp too dull - it wouldn't take much to lift it. Also one window had no mosquito grille - I didn't mind, but it was a 1.5 metre drop if you fell out of the window! The bathroom was a bit 70s-perfectly adequate, but again could do with a lift and slightly less basic/thin towels. The breakfast was fine and plenty of it and the location is pretty central. Upper rooms seemed much nicer - but staircase is steep if you have mobility problems. Certainly OK for the price - but thick grey dust not acceptable! I would go again but would take an upper room and stress it needs dusting before I arrive -and my standards are not over -high!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the garden on at least the first floor

“Quiet hotel in good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2011

The building is a 15th century town house so is quite interesting historically, but my room was incredibly dark and the owners are obviously very keen on energy-saving lightbulbs, which didn't help. The general air was one of slight shabbiness (one of the curtains was apparently falling off), but, on the plus side, the bed was very comfortable and the breakfast was good - and eaten in a lovely room overlooking the garden. There was a good amount of storage as well. One warning: there is no lift (understandable given the building's age) and the main staircase is steep - anyone unsure on their feet might find it difficult to negotiate, especially with luggage.

The location is excellent, in a quiet road behind the Graslei/Koranlei in Ghent's historic centre.

“Would definitely go back!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2011

Very charming place with loads of character. A stones throw from historic Ghent, which is an amazing town! The staff was friendly and helpful, rooms were lovely and breakfast was delicious.

“Good value, nice location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 March 2011

I had a really good stay at Erasmus Hotel, though I principally just used it for sleeping and eating breakfast. It's a very atmospheric hotel - and I chose to see the rather steep stairs (no elevator) as an element of charm rather than a problem. Could be a problem for older people, though.
The room was just right for my needs - maybe a little small for two people (there were two beds), but that may be the reason why I was given this room as a solo traveler. Nothing spectacular, but clean and sort of cosy.
The location is wonderful, near the river and really quite central, but still far enough from the area where it might be noisy.
Nice breakfast, but again, nothing too spectacular.

The only thing I had a problem with were the bed lamps. The light's too poor - I found it difficult to read by them. Plus the view from the bedroom window - a brick wall.
But still better than no window at all
