“Not too bad overall, but didn't meet expectations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 May 2009

We stayed at the hotel in the beginning of May, 2009, our choice based on reviews from Tripadvisor. The location of the hotel is very good - 10 minutes away from the old town at the maximum, with public transport stops and a shopping centre next to the hotel. The room was clean, but not that spacious, and bearing notable signs of shabbiness - just as the lobbies. The hotel obviously needs refurbishment, and the attempts to imitate an antique style doesn't really help to hide the drawbacks. OK for one night's stay, but we wouldn't choose it again. It should be pointed out, however, that we were pleasantly surprised by the breakfast standard - excellent selection, everything tasty and fresh, served in a nice atmosphere. Anyway, there are better options in Ghent for the similar amount of money.

“Crummy”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2007

Not a well kept hotel. Scruffy in fact. The furniture in the room that I had was falling apart. The breakfast was basic.

“Pleasantly surprised with the Eden Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2006

Very happy with our one night in the Eden. Good bars right around the corner, and although the Red Light District was right there - we didn't know about it from any noise, etc.

Great staff, cheap parking and the rooms were bigger than I've experienced in Europe. We had a triple room for the three of us and it was perfect.

“Fine hotel for the colder months, but not in the summer.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 September 2005

The main reasons for us booking this hotel were:
a. car parking (€5 a night)
b. price (€70 a night)
c. air conditioning

Well a and b weren't a problem but c was. Unfortunately there wasn't any air conditioning in our room. All we had was an electric fan (to help push the warm air around). We had a nose in a couple of other rooms (as the doors were left open by the cleaners) and found these to be the same.

Other than that the hotel was fine and our room was clean and tidy. We had room 27 (at the rear of the building) which wasn't huge but did us for the 4 nights. Our bathroom contained a toilet, wash basin and shower cubicle although some of the rooms do contain a bath.

The room contained a fridge which was very handy as well as a safe in the wardrobe. One nice inclusion would have been tea and coffee making facilities.

We found the selection at breakfast was good although one fellow diner moaned at the lack of fruit (but she appeared to moan about most things, including the previous evenings thunder storm - some people are born to whinge.)

If you're arriving by car it's extremely easy to find (if you've printed a map off the internet). However be warned that if you arrive late in the evening the car park may be full. We encountered this one evening but just double parked and left our key at reception so that they could move it in the morning instead of waking us up.

The centre of Ghent is about 5 mins casual stroll away, although be advised that the street next to and behind the hotel lead into Ghents red light district which does create a bit of noise at night but not much. The street is a much smaller version of Amsterdams red light distict and contains glass windows where provocatively clad women ply their trade.

Don't be worried that the hotel is located here because we only discovered this by accident on our last morning as we decided not to walk up the main street into town for a change.

As for food, your are spoiled for choice as the main street into the centre is loaded with all types of restaurants. We ate at the Eat@Cafe on the corner from the hotel and found the food to be very good and reasonably priced.

If you need a supermarket, come out of the hotel, turn right and walk to the end of the road, cross over into the square and the building on your right is a shopping centre which contains many stores including a supermarket on the ground floor.

Overall, if you want a clean, cheap and cheerful hotel with inclusive breakfast and parking for only a couple of nights and aren't bothered by the heat in the room being warmer than the outside air temparature then this hotel will do.

If i was to visit Ghent in the future i would only book this hotel when the weather was liable to be cool as i wouldn't require the air conditioning.
