“Nice location, otherwise quite average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 July 2011

I stayed with my wife and kids at the Gravensteen for 2 nights. First, the good points. The hotel is in a great location, right across from Gravensteen castle in the older part of the city, which is where most of what you will want to see is located. The staff are professional and helpful, but, while not unfriendly, are also not welcoming either. Our room was big, in what I believe is the older part of the hotel, and the room had a nice tub and shower.

Now for the bad. The bed was not very comfortable, sloping in towards the center. The sleeper sofa installed into the room was more comfortable, but still not great. The doors didn't close well, as if the building had shifted a bit. And, the rooms with the tub and with the toilet were overall clean, but really needed some detail cleaning, with mildew in the various cracks and between tiles. Wireless wasn't fee, but also wasn't too expensive (at least if you didn't need it for that long), and at least seemed to work well. Finally, the breakfast was extremely expensive, especially given the number of places close by where one could grab something to eat, so we didn't sign up for it.

“Not a three star hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 June 2011

The hotel is very well located but the bedroom was a disappointment. It should have been redone some five years ago. The carpet was aged and full of dirty spots. The vent in the bathroom was not working. The toilet flush was often broken with water running on and on. The wall paper was torn and dirty. The sheets had holes (that had been repaired) and were obviously not new. My five-year old daughter was eaten by mosquitoes at night. It was impossible to have internet in the room even though we paid for it (I should add that they reimbursed us the internet fee and let us use it for free in the lobby which was in another building). We filled an evaluation form, explaining our complaints, and for the following four days they told us: "your letter is being sent to the management... your letter is being sent to the management". Obviously, the management is not easy to be reached.

“Good location, comfy bed, nice breakfast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 April 2011 via mobile

The location was very good! The standard room for the price was good with a comfy bed and pillows. Breakfast was included in the price and much better than most hotels of this rating in Europe! Parking was available but limited. Only down side was the noise from the street as a group of people were outside until the wee hours and then the trams started going past!

“Very decent, centrally located hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 March 2011

We were put up here while visiting the University of Ghent on academic business. It's an old building located very centrally, close both to the university and the medieval town with all the tourist sights. It is perhaps on the expensive side, but perfectly comfortable, with a very professional staff. Because it's an old building, getting to the room can be like negotiating a maze, but that is part of the charm. Our room on the top floor had a very interesting, quirky layout - the bathroom and small sofa area on the upper level where you entered, followed by a small spiral six-stair staircase down to a lower level with a table and the bedroom - kind of fun, though a bit tricky to navigate at night. Our room was nice and quiet. The breakfast was costly but very impressive, with an excellent selection of cheeses, meats, breads and pastries, yogurt, etc. and in a pleasant room.

“Very average experience, have seen much better”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 March 2011

Went for a weekend to Ghent and stayed in this hotel. When you enter the hotel it looks very nice but the room looked a bit like a prison. Small, very basic and wooden floor which made a lot of noise. Probably never heard of colours becaues it was not used in our room.
Bed was ok for one night, bathroom was pretty big with a good shower.
It is old and not always clean and way to much money for what the offer you.
Positive point, great location.
