I've stayed in a few Ibis' now and pretty much know what to expect; basic but clean, no-nonsense accommodation. The bathroom, as usual for this chain, is very small but the bedroom roomy enough with adequate space for our weekend stay. Only slight quibble about the room was that it got rather warm at night, there was air-con but we didn't touch it, however it appeared to kick in by itself in the early hours!
Not exactly service with a smile at reception but we soon learned this seems to be more down to the nature of people in Ghent, seeming fairly dour at first until you crack the surface! :-)
The location was great. Given the choice between this and the Ibis near the cathedral, we went for this, slightly cheaper option (fairly pricey for an Ibis but hotels appear to be on the expensive side here) and were perfectly happy with the location of this hotel. Its on the main #1 tram route into town, with a stop just outside the door. The hotel itself is a short stroll into the historic centre, via the main shopping street.
We didn't opt for breakfast at 14 Euro (gulp!), intending to go to a nearby cafe. Discovered that cafe's don't open too early around here but got lucky in finding a bakery on the shopping street, so stocked up with fresh bread and pastries for the rest of our stay.
The bar seemed pricey for an Ibis, however was pretty much on a par with the area and was a pleasant place to finish off our first evening with a late night coffee.
Room Tip: didn't appear to be a problem with any room, all of the same standard and in a fairly quiet area...
