On our arrival to the Novotel Gent Centrum, our stay there was sadly not quite as enjoyable as we expected. We found check-in very swift and the lobby area and bar very modern and stylish however, what was off putting was the strong smell of sewerage that hung in the air. The rooms were average and of a good size but a good nights sleep was almost impossible due to the noise from an alley way which was cobbled, and every morning the deliveries drivers would bring the trolleys up the alley way to off load. Also, very close by is a square, and we experienced people of all hours passing through the alley way being of course, slightly merry to say the least but most of all... The church bells (although I love them) never ever stopped ringing so, my advise would be to request a room that faces inwards towards the swimming pool - courtyard view. That way you would be sheltered from the side and the front of the hotel were people and holiday coaches pass and stop off. Food was average and drinks usual hotel prices. My main concern though was the hostile nature of two members of restaurant staff who were extremely unprofessional, one being the restaurant manager. If they can't deal with calm and reasonable guests then there is something very wrong, and I would expect a staff member no matter what rank or role, to have some professionalism in the work place. I hope training needs are identified and amended swiftly because we tried to make a complaint, and to no avail. Them aside most staff were friendly and helpful, as are the locals and we will return to Ghent, it's just so charming however we will be staying elsewhere on our return visit.
Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the courtyard may be quieter.
