I was very pleased with my ten-week stay from February to April 2010. I was able to negotiate a discounted rate paying cash a week in advance that was terrific in holding down my expenses—contact the Infotel in advance in you’re interested in doing likewise; they will provide receipts for your cash payments. (In order to hold down costs, I elected not to have breakfast included in my nightly rate so I cannot provide a review on food service, plus I only had weekly cleaning service.)
There is a long list of things I liked about my stay. The Infotel is located in the center of Mons a couple of hundred meters off the Grand Place and in an alleyway that, while making locating it the first time difficult, affords good noise abatement. I could see the Mons belfry out my window and hear it chime throughout the day, and nearby restaurant choices were very numerous. The suite was spacious with a separate seating area of small couch and large chair. (I have to say that the couch and chair in my particular suite was profoundly uncomfortable, but I sat on furniture in other suites where this was not the case.) The suite included a kitchen with small refrigerator, microwave, stovetop (no oven), and plenty of kitchen cabinet storage. There is a small Carrefour grocery store located 50m from the hotel. The Infotel will rent out a pots-and-pans set and a tableware set, but I didn’t do this. This ensuite kitchen really helped hold down costs and save time from eating out in restaurants. Big pluses relative to the other hotels that offer extended stay: free in-room wi-fi Internet access and free parking, which could set you back more than €20 per day in other hotels. The bathrooms are very large and the wardrobe accommodated my three suitcases of clothes. The staff is friendly and English speaking. Television consists of some 30 channels, mostly in French or Flemish, but also including CNN, BBC1, and BBC2.
Access to public transport is very good. The intracity Mons bus picks up just outside the alleyway and some of the regional buses connecting Mons to nearby towns and villages pick up about 500 meters down the street. The train and main bus station is about 800 meters, which is fine if you’re not carrying suitcases. I would not recommend dragging wheeled luggage over Mons’ cobblestone streets when you first arrive and are searching for the Infotel.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is planning an extended stay in Mons, whether alone or with family. The Infotel accommodates pets and it appears well set up to string a few rooms together in a hallway or stairwell for families. I will return for an extended stay here in the coming months and will steer my work colleagues here too.
On the negative side, I would comment that the bed has a pretty thin mattress that is not particularly comfortable. The furniture in my room was cheap and uncomfortable, but this was unique to my room. The bathroom, as is not uncommon in Europe, has no cabinet to store anything. And, the stairwell for the building I lived in was quite narrow, which was difficult to negotiate with luggage; this is not the case for all rooms at the Infotel. Finally, the nearest coin laundry is about 800 meters away.
