My husband and I had a great stay at Casa Belgo Argentina. This family hotel is property of Esther and Rene - she's Argentinian and he's Belgian. The house/hotel is located not far away from Horta metro station i Saint Gilles neghbourhood not far away from the centre. We paied 53euro per night breakfast included. Unfortunately the breakfast was composed only of youghourt, bread, butter, chocolate and jam...no cheese or any fruit not even meat... that was a minus...but we survived:) One of the top floor rooms is large with kitchen and shower in the kitchen... don't ask how - was just there;) The heating was ok that;s why we didn't freeze that much while we were in the shower cabin. The bed is amazing - my husband wanted to bring it back home with us;) Another issue was the wirless internet - there is basically no internet on the top floor so make sure to book another room in case you need constant internet. People who have allergy of cats should be awere that the family has 2 cats - one is always on the floor where is the breakfast room and the living room where Esther is during the day and the other one is hiding because is scared of people. The husband is working from home - his "office" is the veterinary downstairs, just under the living room. In general we had a great stay at Casa Belgo-Argentina and would stay there again.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights in early July. When I booked it I couldn't find reviews about it anywhere but - I was impressed with their website and it looked like they were in a great neighborhood (they are!). We had the very top room - had to climb some stairs, but I loved it. The bed was so comfortable and being on the top floor was completely private. With so many tourists in the center of Belgium is was so nice to stay off the beaten path and retreat to our room. They have a lovely home and Ester was a wonderful host. We paid 110 Euro for two people for two nights (breakfast included)! It was the best deal during our trip. The B&B is right around the corner from the Horta metro (subway) stop, so getting around the city was a piece of cake. If you stay here, make some time to explore the neighborhood a bit - there are great places to see and eat just steps away!

  • Liked — Great value at a wonderful B&B

My husband & I really enjoyed our stay at Casa Belgo Argentina in a working class neighbourhood in Brussels back in October 2007. The B&B is above the husband's veterinary office. We spent part of a morning chatting with him, Rene Sterpin (Belgian), who regaled us with stories of his irreverent student days. His wife, Esther Amer (from Argentina), is a huge fan of Art Nouveau. Brussels has lots of it!

They have two cats, but one hides. Kitty more than made up for Michotte's reclusive ways by waiting for me every morning at the bottom of the stairs. I enjoyed the breakfasts, in part because I'm fond of fruit and cheese (I'm not a bacon-and-eggs type). Plus Kitty was so affectionate! One morning, we overslept and showed up late for breakfast. I was quite apologetic, but Esther kept assuring me that it didn't matter, "It's only serious for Kitty."

We stayed in the top floor room, which also has a kitchen. One evening, we picked up some prepared goodies from the nearby market and ate them in the kitchen. It felt as if we were almost in our own little apartment. The shower is in the kitchen. I prefer baths, but I didn't mind, because I found the setting rather amusing. There's another room downstairs, which doesn't have a kitchen, but is more conventional.

If you need to use a phone or the internet, there's a shop across the street. There are a few restaurants in the area. Up the street (about 10-20 minute walk) is a lovely park that has green parrots. The subway is a walk of about 5-10 minutes from the B&B.

Recommended for: getting off the beaten track; those with curiosity and a sense of adventure; cat lovers; more modest budgets; those who want privacy, but find hotels impersonal.
Not recommended for: those with mobility issues; those who insist on luxury (however, we were comfortable and the neighbourhood is quiet).

  • Liked — Away from touristy areas; good price; fun hosts, including the cat.
  • Disliked — No access to internet.
