“Generally good, spoiled by 1 staff member”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2011

Good hotel with recently refurbished rooms and an excellent location with easy access to the Metro.
My trip was for business and all in all was very satisfactory. The final day was spoiled by 1 member of staff who seemed to go out of his way to be unhelpful. All I wanted was to check in for my flight online and print the boarding pass, he did not want to help and gave me very very vague directions to an internet cafe.
As a side note, I did notice the night before another guest having a problem with the same member of staff. He was having and argument with him and saying the staff member had a 'bad attitude'. At the time I thought the guest was being unreasonable but now I think he probably wasn't.

“Really bad experience”

Didn't know it still existed: the single bed. Hostel style rooms with tiny bed, small bathroom and locked windows. Staff is the most impolite and incompetent.
The small room was very warm and smelly. So, i asked at 8pm that some would unlock the window. "15 minutes" was the answer. As I did n it want to wait I went for dinner and came back at around half 11. The room boiling hot, the window locked. Switched on air condition (which requires the room key card to operate) and rang reception. "one second" was the answer. Nothing happened. At mealy midnight I rang reception again, they said "I cannot find the key". "aha. And when did you plan to tell me? At 5 am?". "what?", was the answer. I asked for a solution and was offered to wait till 7 am when additional staff arrives at the reception. I asked reception to try again, maybe call the manager. After 5 minutes they said that nobody knew where the key was and they could do nothing. At midnight of a cloudy day in Brussels I had 24 degrees in my room. At 8 am, the air condition had brought it down to 23. No sleep, no service, ridiculous price. Never again! Stay away!

“Very helpful and friendly staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2011

My husband and I finished up our vacation in Europe with his meeting in Brussels and stayed here three nights. The executive room was much larger than other hotel rooms we'd been staying in, plenty of room to unpack and put things away, a wall-length desk, and two comfortable chairs in addition to a good desk chair.

What we appreciated most was all the help the staff gave us. My husband left his Kindle on the train and the man at the desk helped make many phone calls to track it down, and we did get it back! They were also helpful with metro directions and where to find things (bubble wrap, for instance). Very friendly people and seemed happy to help.

In the mornings my husband chose to pay the 15 euros for a large breakfast, but I was able to just get coffee and croissant for under 3 euros at the coffee shop. That worked out well for us since I don't like a big breakfast.

For those people who prefer room service for dinner, this is not the place to be. But if you don't mind going out and want somewhere close, there is a good restaurant right on the corner as well as a steak and burger place across the street.

I'm sure my husband will stay here on his next business trip.

“Hotel Progress has pros and cons”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

Pros; Location is good as it is near the Gard du Nord and beside other major hotels such as Crowne Plaza, Hilton and Sheraton. It is situated at the top of the main shopping street so it is an interesting 15 minute walk down the main commercial street to the Grande Place which is the central tourist area. Rooms are comfortable with a fridge and air-con. The beds are VERY comfortable. The ambiance of the hotel is pleasant and a nice touch is the free massage chairs in the hotel lobby - very welcome if you have over-done the sight-seeing on foot. There is free wi-fi in the lobby area but not in the rooms.
Cons; The is no room service at all and only a small coffee shop at the entrance to the hotel where you can buy a snack or coffee, however this closes around 6ish so from then onwards no food or drink is available. There is a coffee machine in the room BUT it costs 3 euros to make each cup of coffee in the Nespresso machine. There is no hotel car parking but a secure public car park is available around the corner for 13 euros per day.
We got the room on an internet deal and I would not like to pay the full price as it falls short or its 4 star ranking.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the inwards facing courtyard as these are VERY quiet rooms.

“new, nice, tidy hotel but really expensive and noisy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2010

the hotel is small and you nearly pass it without noticing, the progress hotel in brussels. it is close to the northern trainstation (gare du nord). the lobby and the rooms are quite new and a modern style.

i had an "executive room" which was medium sized, not too small, not too big. i guess regular rooms are quite small. the bed was big and comfortable, the desk was big.
there was a new nescafe machine - i am glad i red the reviews on this website before, otherwise i would not have realized that one cup of coffee is 3€. speaking of which - the mini bar is really expensive.

the windows where next to the street, i got awaken a couple of times by really loud sirenes of police or emergency cars. it was also not possible to warm the room without using the noisy climatisation - i had to wake up to a cold room.

for the price it was not a good experience.
