“Worst Ever...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 November 2011

I rarely write really negative reviews but I feel compelled to in this instance....

I shudder to even think about this place so it's difficult to bring myself to write this review. I'll try to be as objective as I can but the unbearable odor in the annex which houses rooms 1-4 at the rear on the ground floor of the "Residence" lingers vividly in my mind and on my belongings to the extent that everything is for the laundry, even clean clothes I didn't wear! The stench was so bad I couldn't wait to get home and delouse! I wish I could exorcise my memory of the experience as easily!

These are the sub-standard rooms with no windows recently referred to by a previous reviewer but thankfully I wasn't savaged by beg-bugs, although I did notice a brand-new mattress, which will be scant comfort or protection against future infestation as it sits on a filthy base with a fabric headboard. The carpets are ingrained with years of dirt, highly unpleasant to walk on in bare feet.

The Albert Residence accommodates overflow from the Albert Hotel two doors down and I suspect rooms 1-4 were added by the owners to capitalize on demand but they really should re-invest a little to refurbish these rooms completely or shut them down as it is probably these rooms that are ruining the hotel's reputation in my opinion.

They must have better quality rooms because other guests seemed perfectly happy and the hotel was completely full so there was no prospect of changing my room despite my request. Nor could I afford any available alternatives after being so penny-wise, pound foolish paying upfront for the Albert.

The standard rate for a single room is €70pn. I paid €55 but when you factor in €7.50 for breakfast and a whopping €15 for daily internet, neither of which I availed of as I couldn't bear to spend the time in the hotel, it's not really that much of a bargain compared to high-quality hotels in Brussels for around €100pn including free wifi. I wont make that mistake again. €100 is the minimum I'll budget for in Brussels in future.

I have been twice foolish though. I stayed here before 14 years ago when the my original hotel double booked and they accommodated us here overnight. We only spent a couple of hours there after a very late night out but my wife and I have since regarded it as the worst room we've ever stayed in. It has worsened with age. The Albert Hotel, or at least the Residence, bears little resemblance to it's website so I simply didn't recognize it until I arrived.

If there are any redeeming qualities, housekeeping do their best daily, the girls on reception were quite helpful with public transport advice and the location is good so I could avoid taxis completely by using the metro, tram and buses to various suburbs or walking into town.

The city center lies beyond the church at the top of the road. It s pleasant 20 minute walk turning left out of the hotel towards Botanique Metro avoiding the seedy red-light area in the opposite direction towards the North Station. Schaarbeek is not the best address but it ain't all bad either!

Brussels is brilliant but I cannot recommend the Albert. The first time I stayed here all those years ago, I said the same, in vain..... I'll never stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask to see your room first and avoid rooms 1-4 in the residence or better still just stay somewhere...

“Cramped and tired, but cheap”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

Good points:
-- Inexpensive. I paid 55 Euro per night, plus 7.50 for a buffet breakfast.
-- Central enough. I took a folding bike, so I was about 15 minutes from the centre, it would have taken longer by public transport.
-- Generally helpful staff.

Bad points:
-- Very cramped. The stairway is too narrow to use if you're carrying a suitcase, but there is a (very small) lift/elevator. The room was equally cramped, with very little space to move around.
-- Noisy. I was OK because I always travel with ear-plugs (I've learned my lesson from places like this), but I was aware of a lot of street-noise both at night and in the morning.
-- Not well-kept. Tiles missing in the bathroom; a shower-head that sprayed water over the top of the shower-curtain onto the floor; a cigarette-burn in the bedcover; 1970s-style decor; etc.

Summary:
If you go with low expectations and ear-plugs, and just use the room for sleeping in, it's OK. If you want comfort / romance / style / a quiet night / etc., you're in the wrong place!

“Two stars, and you get what you pay for”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2011

I booked this hotel because for some reason, at my desired time prices of all hotels in Brussels had rocketed.
Having paid just 55 EUR/night, I was prepared for a less-than-perfect experience. However, it turned out be bad enough for me to write this review.
Upon arrival I learned that they could not find my reservation made a month earlier. A man introducing himself as the owner of the place was quick to come forward and admit their mistake. Fair enough, things happen. What are they going to do about it? They are going to move me to another of their four properties in town, the Hotel Albergo. It is in the same (red-light) district near the North Station but a little closer, therefore I agreed to move. They said it was the same standard. The owner drove me there. After my request, he gave me a free Wifi code valid for one day (worth 12 EUR) as compensation for the inconvenience. Nice gesture, and I did not mind the change much then.
They gave me my room key, and the first warning sign was that they showed me to the stairs leading DOWN from the tiny reception. Yes, the room (No 40) was in the basement right under the reception, with two half-windows of opaque glass letting in a little light from the level of pavement (and plenty of light from passing car's headlights, as I'd find out at night). Each time I entered I would be greeted by a hanging musty smell.
There was a small LCD TV on the wall and a night-lamp on the stand for equipment. The wardrobe didn't have any handles, only holes for where they should have been, but it did have dust on the top. The adjoining toilet/shower had even more damp smell, probably because of hardly-existing ventilation in the cellar. The two soap and shampoo dispensers were empty, and I had to ask at the reception to give me some soap. After returning from town I found a bottle of cheap shampoo on the shower floor, for me to use as soap.
The shower ceiling had green mold bubbles everywhere - upon noticing them I was not so sure if I wanted to take showers there any more.
There was no room cleaning service after the night - they only brought in a fresh set of towels on my second day.
I had to go to an important meeting in the morning, and thus came to the reception at about 6.30 to ask how much it would take (and approximately cost) to go by taxi to my intended location. There was only one middle-aged guy going about some house-keeping who indifferently replied that he could call the taxi company, but that he was not supposed to know these things as he was not a taxi driver (as if I had implied that). He exchanged a few words on the phone and gave the receiver to me, not bothering to do the arranging himself.
I agreed that the taxi would come for me at 7.15, and mentioned to the guy that I was now going to have breakfast (at the other side of the reception, same room) so he could not down my room number. He was exhilarated: "But breakfast only starts at 7!" pointing to a bag full of buns that he was taking to the breakfast room. Frankly, I hadn't checked, but thought that 6 or 6.30 was not such an early time in a city like Brussels. Anyway, the guy clearly felt offended by my suggestion, and even though I said it was OK, he went on bumbling how people still sleep at this time and repeating that breakfast was served from 7, as if I had made the stupidest comment in my life.
Anyway, I came back at 7, knowing I had just 15 minutes to eat breakfast before my cab. I spent some minutes experimenting with the coffee and juice machines both of which worked only partly, dispensing some drinks, but not others, and was about in the middle of my meal when the guy said the taxi was there. Indeed, it was exactly 7.15. I thought I'd grab a few more bites, knowing that I wouldn't be able to leave my meeting until 13.00, after all three or five minutes of waiting by the cabbie would not change much. However, there was the sound of horn outside, and the hotel guy was telling me repeatedly that I must go immediately because the taxi is blocking the way for someone. (It is strange because the hotel is on a wide part of the street near a junction.). Although I think that it is the cabbie's job to do the driving/traffic part, and mine is to pay him for the extra waiting incurred, the hotel guy's constant pressure that I must go now got the better of me, and I ran to the cab, half-hungry and almost forgetting important papers in the room.
The other reception staff who I met (a lady spending all her time on Facebook and another younger guy) were quite nice but not too enthusiastic about their duties.
I was thinking how I could sum up this experience:
+ ok price (the owner even told me someone else was paying 139 euros for the same hotel);
+ good attitude of the owner;
+ ok location;
but
- dirty room and antisanitary shower;
- room in the basement!
- two-star staff attitude (on average);
- the fact that they keep moving guests around suggests a habit, not a coincidence.

“I suffered because of bedbugs!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2011

I suffered because of bedbugs! It took me many days to be free of the effects of bedbug bites. I had to throw away the clothes that I used while staying in that hotel to make sure I don't bring home the bugs. It's terrible. Sorry. I hope the hotel does something about this. Elevator is also an old fashioned lift. It could hardly accommodate 2 people without any luggage. Good breakfast though. But internet access is not free.

“worst experience in my life”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2011

I never imagined that such a place could exist in Brussels.
The first night I was accommodated in the famous room #5. The dirtiest room I have ever seen. I have to admit that I barely slept, maybe for 1 hour or 2.
The second night I was moved to Albert residences. Another very strange location. Could you imagine a hotel room without windows? If not, go there. Or better add a few bucks and go to a decent hotel.

Room Tip: Any other hotel should be better!
