Booked 3 nights from Friday, 27th - Sunday 29th January, 2012. Flew with BMI from Edinburgh. On arrival at Brussels took the No. 12 bus into the city centre and got off at Schuman. Hotel is only about 400 yards from the bus stop situated in the middle of a quiet street. Small and compact with impressive foyer.
When i booked in, encountered the only problem I had all weekend. I had booked a smoking room. The receptionist informed me that the hotel had become a smoke free hotel from the start of January.
However, they gave me a room with a large balcony which solved the problem basically, but for the next 3 days, I froze my whatsits off every time i went out on to the balcony for a cigarette.
Take notice Holiday Inn - YOU SHOULD HAVE ADVISED ME BY E MAIL before I arrived.
Other than this the hotel is excellent. The room was beautiful with lovely decor. An excellent bed which afforded me a good night's sleep every night. The area is very quiet and I heard no noise whatsoever from outside.
The bathroom was outstanding with both a bath and a walk in shower. Gallons of piping hot water, liqiud soap dispensers beside the bath and in the shower unit and all the usual extras.
Included in the price , which was well under 200 euros, was breakfast. Really good selection of both hot and cold foods and breakfast was available until 1100 hours at the weekend.
The reception staff were excellent and could not do enough to assist. In particular, the male receptionist on duty on Saturday and Sunday morning. He was able to answer all my questions on the best shopping sites in Brussels and wrote down directions for me which proved to be inch perfect. Never got lost and believe me the wife dragged me round every shopping cente in Brussels.
The hotel is perfectly situated to get about central Brussels. Purchase the 3 day Mobib ticket for 9.50euro which gives unlimted access to all buses, trams and the underground.
The male receptionist advised me there was a national strike in Belgium on the Monday and getting back to the airport could not be garuanteed by public transport. He arranged for a taxi, allowed us a later check out and the trip to the airport was no problem.
From my previous reviews on this website, it can be seen that I travel worldwide and i definately rate this hotel extremely highly. Everything was very good and the price a total bargain.
For non smokers, the Schuman is a must. I would use the hotel again if they could guarantee me room 205, but only in the summer months, as boy that balcony is cold. Better the cold than the alternative of a 150 euro surchage if you smoked in the room
Congratulations to all the staff at the Schuman for making our stay an extremely pleasant one.
Room Tip: The rooms to the ear of the hotel are exceptionally quiet
