We booked at Stanhope only as an alternate choice since our chosen hotel was fully booked. We did not regret it.
We were given a nice two storey bedroom – which was a nice asset since it works like a suite (i.e. you do not get the mess of the « night part » before the room gets done). Average size to Bxl standards. Beautiful (if a little bit worn) upholstery and bathroom. Soundproof windows and blackout curtains.
Pros :
- staff was very nice and helpful. In a warm, natural, easygoing way. A special hello to Roger ! Concierge was knowledgeable and loved his city, providing great addresses and advices .
- Private parking (25€/day). NOT easy to access, via a steep and narrow corridor.
- Location : about 8-10mn walk from Théâtre du Parc, the Palais Royal and Gaulois, 20mn to Sablon, less than half an hour stroll to Grand’Place and Ste Catherine.
- The patio terrace is beautiful and feels like home. Weather permitting (which, halas, wasn’t the case), barbecues are organised every fridays. Pity we couldn’t enjoy it… and yet another reason to go back.
- Good warm breakfast.
- Excellent 24h room service.
- Last not least, the umbrella provided inroom : definitely useful.
Cons (if there must be):
- the remote control of the TV actually interracted at the same time with both TVs. We found a way to avoid that by leaving a thick screen in front of the IR receptor of the downstairs TV.
- Storage was just about enough for a short trip. For more than a week, the only cupboard would have been definitely a little too tiny.
- No tee facility (but a well catered minibar).
All in all a very nice, welcoming, discreet hotel. It may have 140+ rooms but does somehow exhude the atmosphere of a family run hotel.
