When first approaching and entering, I thought to myself, this is a mistake. I got a very cheap rate through RatesToGo and I could see why. The awning at the front is torn and battered, the lobby is uninviting, there are books and papers piled up and the common areas are generally quite shabby with little or no carpets. The reception staff weren't rude but this isn't a Hitton!
Having said all that, the room itself wasn't too bad... really. Yes, the furniture is cheap (like MFI, for the Brits), the mirror was propped on the sink, and the cold tile floor was "gritty" but the shower worked well with plenty of hot water, I had a shared, concrete "balcony" which runs across the rear of the hotel to the fire escape (maybe a security risk but door and window were secure double-glazing) and there was space enough. It looked like new tiling in the bathroom too.
The bed covers were stained but the mattress and sheets were OK. The TV worked. The breakfast was pretty good (and included in the rate) and the lift goes up and down.
Don't take your wife for a romantic weekend but for the single, unfussy traveller, it's a step up from a hostel. A small step, but a step nevertheless.
