“Dangerous hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 March 2011

I stayed at that hotel last weekend and will never go back again. The rooms are dangerous. I stayed 2 nights in that hotel and I stayed in 3 different rooms in that short space of time. At arrival, staff seemed friendly, hotel lounge very nicely decorated and the room very nice at first impression. On my first night, the bathroom mirror smashed on the floor at 2:30 am waking me up very scared (thinking someone broke into the room), the mirror fell because it was sticked to the wall tiles and not even fixed securily to the wall, I guess the change of temperature made the mirror slipped from the tiles. The bathroom could not be used at all so they change me room. The second bedroom (2nd night), I plugged my charger to one of the electric plugs, when I unplugged it, the whole plug was coming out of the wall. Later, at 11pm, I felt cold and wanted to put the heating on, it did not work, they changed me room again. Finally, the third room was ok, although the shower head needed replacement as the water was not flowing properly.

“Worst Hotel I have stayed in”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2011

I was appalled by the service from the moment we walked in the door. We waited about 10 minutes just for the front desk person to acknowledge us, he saw us, but was too busy doing nothing to help us. When we were finally helped he was very short with us, not at all someone who should be working at the front greeting customers.

This hotel has two elevators, one by the front desk, and one up a few steps. Don't take the elevator to the back half. It looks to be from when the building was first built, and its really small. Kind of a scary looking device in the first place. I got stuck in the elevator for a good 10-15 minutes. I pushed the phone button a couple times...no answer. I pushed the alarm button a couple times...still no answer. When someone finally did come to help he opened the door and proceeded to yell at me as if it was my fault the crappy elevator got stuck. Again an example of the customer service to expect.
The rooms aren't anything special and could definitely use a fresh coat of paint.

The location is not the best, far from the center and "action" of the city, however the metro stop is a short 5 min walk. Being female I did not feel safe in this area of town after dark, seemed to be a male only crowd after dark, close to a lot of gentlemen clubs.

For the price there are definitely better hotels out there. I wouldn't stay here ever again.

“Stay away”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2011

First of all this hotel is of very low quality and they charge quite. It is so expensive (I paid €140 per night) that you tell yourself “it can’t be that bad”. Well, it is. I found nothing good about this hotel. Apart from its dangerous location, the hotel has no room service. There is a restaurant next door but it closed between 15:00 until 19:00, so in the meantime you can’t even get a cup of coffee. The bathrooms are very old and poorly maintained and there are electric fan heaters and unprotected electrical sockets and light switches in the bathrooms which are very hazardous.
Problems began as soon as we arrived. When we finished checking in, we got on the tiny little elevator, which stopped and we got trapped in it for about 20 minutes. Imagine being trapped in a very small space without being able to move a muscle. Thank God my cell phone was working in there and I manage to call a friend and he notified them, because apparently they could hear the emergency bell of the elevator. The man that finally let us out told us that this was the first time this had happened to them, but after three days there we seen that happed quite a few times. Also, when the maids were cleaning the rooms and moving their carts up and down the floors, the elevator was always unavailable. The stairs were very badly built. I felt like I was drunk or something climbing those stairs. The funny thing was that every time you reach a floor you open a door to the corridor and open another door to continue up. You have to see it to understand what I mean.
Breakfast was good but didn’t have the variety that someone would expect, and you had to go down early before the food run out.

First of all thank you for taking the time to complete a review. I have conversed with the customer who wrote this review as I was concerned about several factually incorrect statements. Unfortunately the customer refused to speak with me
1) You did not pay 140 Eur per night
2) You booked through an agent who added a approx 50% on to the rate
3) The area is not dangerous and you did not encounter any problems in the locality
4) The hotel does not have room service, like the vast majority of 3* hotels and we do not advertise room service
5) Restaurants are normally closed during the middle of the day. The restaurant is accesible through the hotel
6) The building is made up of 4 Art Nouveau townhouses, so each room is of a different size and shape.
7) The room that you stayed in has now been renovated, as have the other 20 in the same building
8) There are no bare wires or hazardous electrics in the bathrooms
9) The reason the elevator stopped was because there is a safety trip switch if you are too close to the doors. This is to prevent any injury - a wise precaution, I think you will agree?
10) The cleaning staff need to use the lifts in order to bring clean bedding etc to each floor. I am sorry that this inconvenienced you and we have asked staff to make sure they do not block the use of the lifts
11) The stairs are not badly built but they were built 100 years ago! Fortunately the doors you refer to are Fire Doors - we find them a good safety feature
12) The food does not run out at breakfast
The Floris Ustel is a standard 3* hotel with a variety of rooms of different sizes, in a centrally located position, within easy reach of the Airport and main train stations

“bad hotel in a very dangerous area!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2010
1

We were transferred from Hotel Arlequin Brussels as they had "so-called" problems at booking.com (my guess is that they were overbooked and were badly organized).

We got transferred to Hotel Ustel although my colleague was a loyal customer at Arlequin Brussels Central...
They advised that it was only 10-15min by feet but it took at least 15min by taxi already and it was way out of city center! Hotel Ustel is actually in Brussels Midi, more a suburb of Brussels Central!

Then, arriving at the hotel Ustel, we were already warned by the taxi driver that it is a very dangerous area and that we should we careful. He said that all the crimes happen near Brussels Midi and we should in no case take the subway there at night as we might get attacked!!!

It has been very unconvenient for us as it was a business trip and of course we chose a hotel which was more convenient for us, BUT with this change, we lost a lot of time for the transport and there were no restaurants in the surroundings. We had to take the subway to somewhere for dinner and also to avoid being in this dangerous area too long...

I have not yet mentioned the state of the hotel Ustel: everything was quite old, noisy (you could hear every passing car!) and had bad service (or even no service during breakfast). When you ask them to clean the table, they would just clean the borders and you need to take the forks and knives yourself! Also, we saw them taking the glasses with the thumb inside the glass (disgusting)!

We are very disappointed and hope to warn everybody about this hotel.

We have not yet checked the price from hotel Ustel, but we strongly believe it was cheaper than Hotel Arlequin Grand-Place. Our bill was already prepaid, so we had no choice but accept their transfer. The hotel Ustel was not even worth half of the amount we gave. We know this as my friend used (and never again!) to be a good customer of Hotel Arlequin Grand-Place and she clearly knows that hotel Ustel is not comparable to it.

I was very sorry to hear about your experiences at teh Floris Ustel Hotel. You are perfectly correct, we were in overbooking for your stay. As with airlines and all hotels, this sometimes happens and is not due to bad organisation but due to the fact that around 10% of customers cancel their bookings or just don't turn up, which leaves hoteliers with 10% lost revenue unless hotels overbook...To start with our company policy is to explain this to customers, so my apologies that this was not done. It is in fact a 15 minute walk from the Floris Arlequin to the Floris Ustel or 5 min by car. The distance is exactly 1500m
Brussels Midi is not a suburb of Brussels but is in the centre of the city. it is no more dangerous than other areas of any big city. I work in the hotel and have never been attacked!
There are plenty of restaurants in the area and in fact one attached the hotel - which has an excellent reputation. I am sure that the Reception staff would have been very happy to point out some good choices if you decided to eat out.
The hotel is in the centre of a busy city, so there is noise. However rooms are double-glazed and there are more than 50% of the rooms "at the back", which are very quiet. There will be a programme of renovations to bring all the rooms up to the same standard, as currently some are older than others.
As to bad service in the breakfast room, if you had reported this to the management at the time we could have done something to help. I have taken your feedback on board now and have discussed with the staff how to provide a better level of service.
Depsite what you have said about "never again", I would be very happy if you contacted me personally and I can offer you a voucher and guarantee of the Floris Arlequin for your next stay in Brussels
Regards
Richard

“THE WORSE HOTEL EVER . is a 0 star hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2010

I have just came back from Brussels, where the Ustel Midi hotel was a nightmare. Very old broken furniture in the room and bathroom, old tv going crazy sometimes. Even the room was big enough, same the bathroom , the towels were broken and the pressing button from the toilet fell off because was very old, and even we announced the damage, nobody came to fix it. The morning when we had to check out we went for breakfast at 7:10 ,but nobody was serving it ,even they said the breakfast is 7 to 10.
it made me sick to my stomach !
