“dilapidated hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2011

We arrived at Brussels Midi without map believing this hotel would be visible from the station. We had difficulty finding the hotel since it is actually 4 blocks away. There is little to no street signage outside Brussels Midi and the tram and subway maps are illegible. If it was not for the Villo bike rental maps we would have paid for a cab to take us. On arrival we received a cold reception and given a room in Ustel 2 building. Now this room did not look like the pictures on the Website. This hotel appears to have been partially renovated in 2008 and we were given an un-renovated room. To get to the room we traversed a dilapidated labyrinthian hallway. The room was dark yet reasonably spacious and comfortable. Not all light fittings worked and the bed sagged but after a few Leffe's it did not matter. We slept well until the cleaner decided to knock on our door waking us at at 7am. This hotel is ok for the budget and I would recommend only a single night stay. It is walking distance to the old town centre and plenty of restaurants. The breakfast was unremarkable, except for the weird couple that stole my table. They picked up my things and moved them to another table so they could sit in the sunshine. The place had an eeriness to it. I would suggest you stay away until they finish renovating it.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated room

Thanks for finding the time to write a review about the Floris Ustel Hotel in Brussels. I am sorry that it was difficult for you to find the hotel. As you point out we are only a few minutes walk from Midi station - so very convenient for international traina and air arrrivals - but I find it a good idea to print a google map before I arrive in a new destination. We even provide you with a map on our website !
The rooms in the building Ustel 2 are in fact pictured on our website - the triple room and the standard room pictures under the tag Gallery - so I cannot think why your room looked different. We are constantly "renovating" rooms, which includes redoing bathrooms, flooring and repainting.
The rooms are more than reasonably spacious! Ustel 2 has the smallest rooms in the hotel and even these are large compared to other 3* city centre hotels
I am sorry you found some of your fellow customers weird (at breakfast). We on't have much say in the normaly of those who book our hotels.

“Hotel located in an avoidable area with complementary bad service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

I stayed at this hotel for three nights in September 2011. At first, the hotel seems all right for the type of hotel. There is some obvious wear and tear in the hallways and rooms, but is also relatively clean.
The major problem with this hotel is that it is located in a less than desirable part of the city. On my first evening there, I was mugged by a group of young men less than a block away from this hotel. I then returned to the hotel, unharmed but shaken, and told the concierge at the reception about this incident. The concierge said absolutely nothing. After repeating my story, he just became defensive and said that these things can happen anywhere (which is true, but you would at the very least expect him to say that he's sorry for what happened). He then proceeded to discourage me from informing the police. He then reluctantly said that they were sorry, and told me good night, since he was apparently annoyed to have been bothered. It is not the hotel's fault that this happened, but the obvious lack of compassion and defensiveness from the part of the attending concierge was less than appreciated after having mugged.
Pickpockets are more frequent in this part of the city close to the Midi/Zuid train station (as confirmed with later discussions with a ticket agent and a colleague that has visited Brussels quite often. The later was able to guess in what part of Brussels this happened after I told him this happened.
In addition, the water pressure and temperature are very unstable, even at 5:30 AM on a Sunday morning! I also did not receive a requested wake up call one morning (had to catch an early flight). I did not miss my flight, but only because I bought an alarm clock (since I had lost all confidence on the first night).
Overall, bad service in a bad part of town.

“Charming hotel within walking distance to the grand place”

This hotel is decorated with a modern charm. The free breakfast (which included pastries, meat, cheese, cereal, eggs, bacon, coffee and juice) was excellent and the dining area was very lovely. There is not a restaurant affiliated with the hotel, but a nice restaurant is attached to it. It was a 10 minute walk from the Grand place.. The hotel staff was very friendly and very helpful! I definitely recommend this hotel for mid-20s/30s travelers.

“Better than in reviews, but with unpleasant location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2011

I think the hotel itself recently became better than claimed in most bad reviews. The rooms were clean and ok, although far away from the photos on the web page and "spaceous", but i would say that a normal standard for a 3 stars hotel. The personnel was friendly, breakfast was good. The only thing i really did not like is the district. Did not feel safe with all those drunk people around. And i think that the internet in such hotel shall be for free.

Thank you for your positive comments about the Floris Ustel Midi.
As I have explained in other review responses there are 4 buildings making up the hotel and each building has different styles, sizes and shapes of rooms. There has been a lot of work in many of the rooms, to modernise them and improve facilities and service, since new management took over last year.
I am pleased to hear that you found the staff friendly and helpful.
As to the location - we are ideally situated a 5 minute stroll from Midi International train station, opposite a Metro station and within15 minutes walk of Grand Place. This is a city centre location, so you can expect the roads to be busy but we have more than half our rooms facing the rear and a peaceful internal garden. Sadly like ALL areas in Brussels there are people who drink too much but we have not had any of our customers or staff attacked in the street!! The area is definitely an up and coming one, with the Square de L'Aviation having 4 new and trendy apartment buildings opening in the next few months. Brussels is one of the safest cities in Europe!

“Disappointing-If they told me it was closing down, I wouldn't be surprised”

Starting from the hotel staff, I would say that, with the exception of one of the receptionists, all the others were surprisingly indifferent and in some cases even rude! We were appalled when a member of the kitchen staff scolded my friend at breakfast because, to her mind, there was too much food in her plate and she said the french equivalent of: "Are you going to eat all that? Because you're not allowed to take it with you"!!!!!!! As for the location, the good thing is that it is conveniently situated near Midi train station, but the area is certainly not one of the safest in the city. The rooms were clean, but the shower and toilet were old and quite broken. Personally, I wouldn't expect to see that in a 3-star hotel that charges such high prices. I'm sure you can find something better in that price!
