The small friendly hotel of Le Joli-Bois, Rue Sainte Anne Waterloo is a member of the Logis of Belgium scheme and a good overnight. Fresh, modern rooms, large private parking and a quiet suburban location. The only meal provided is breakfast.
The battlefield is a couple of miles away. And Waterloo itself was much larger than we expected - a small city. It is a long walk from the hotel to the centre. Perhaps 2 miles. The owner makes his own beer - La Waterloise, which tasted very good to me. We dined happily at the Ma Belgitude restaurant serving reasonably priced belgian specialities. We got the train to Brussels, but take a car to the station because it is a further mile west of the town centre.
