“Worked well for a short stay in Waterloo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 March 2011

My husband and I stayed two nights in room 205, one of the large Romantic rooms. The room is good sized, with a large desk, minibar, and table with two chairs. The bed is comfortable and the bathroom is large and well-equipped. The biggest problem with the room is a lack of lighting -- there are many small lights but not enough for working or reading at night. Since we were on a business trip, this was a problem.

The hotel staff responded quickly to fix a burned out bulb and provided a second luggage rack without us even asking. Breakfast was good, and the lounge was a pleasant and comfortable place to meet with a colleague who lives in Waterloo. You can unload your car and use the elevator to take your luggage to the lobby, first or second floors. I had problems accessing the internet on my laptop, but it worked fine for my husband.

“Don't tell anyone else”

Le Joli Bois is in a residential area between the old Charleroi-Brussels road and the modern motorway, about half way between the centre of Waterloo and the battlefield area. The rooms are spacious if quirky, but clean and comfortable, and the service is friendly. The breakfast is better than just average, and the coffee is good (which is more than can be said for what is on offer in the 5* hotels I've stayed in around R/P Schumann). There is a bar at le Joli Bois, but it was always closed by the time we got back (usually around 10 pm). On the other hand, the hotel is only a 10 min walk to the neighbourhood centre where there is a choice of restaurants, bars, etc. It has a regular multinational business clientele, perhaps from companies located nearby (although there is a bus service into Brussels (or to Braine station) from the main road), and was fully booked most of the weekdays we were there. It is too close to Brussels to be cheap, but is reasonable value for money. Best of all, it is ideally located for anyone wanting to visit the battlefield area, which is less than 10 mins away by car (but would be awkward to reach on foot), so I don't intend to tell too many people about it, in the hope that there'll be room for me again next time I want to visit Waterloo.

“A LONG way from everything!”

We booked at this hotel as it appeared from their web site that they were very close to the Waterloo battlefield. This was not so! It was at least a 45 minute walk. The Hotel is really quite isolated from everything. We took the bus from Brain railway station as the driver said that he went to Jol Bois. He meant the Joli Bois bus stop about 2 kms from the hotel. The town of Waterloo is another 30 minute walk away in order to find a restaurant for dinner. That being said some of the restaurants in Waterloo were fantastic and gave us some of the best meals we had in Europe.

Being Belgium everybody smokes and that was apparent when we checked in as the foyer stank of smoke. The room was quite nice with a good size bathroom and there was a nice view from the bedroom window.

What really annoys me with some hotels is the lack of any tea or coffee making facilities in the room and this was no exception. We arrived at 2.00 pm, had not had lunch and could not get a coffee or tea in our room or in the hotel. They also do not do lunches or dinners but the breakfast was superb in a beautiful refectory area with a charming garden view.

The main disadvantage of Le Joli Bois is that it is a LONG way from any restaurants and is a bus trip from the battlefields. The Waterloo battlefield museum in Waterloo itself (the opposite direction from the battlefields) is an absolute must and is a 15 minute bus trip away.
A nice place to stay but if you are not prepared to walk 15 minutes to get to a bus stop or don't have a car, stay somewhere else.

“Nice place, Nice people”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2006

This is a very nice hotel in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Clean rooms, quiet surroundings, nice backyard with tables. The breakfast buffet was tasty. Very nice people, very helpful. If you bring your guitar, Bruno loves the blues.

“Good small hotel in Waterloo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 May 2006

The small friendly hotel of Le Joli-Bois, Rue Sainte Anne Waterloo is a member of the Logis of Belgium scheme and a good overnight. Fresh, modern rooms, large private parking and a quiet suburban location. The only meal provided is breakfast.

The battlefield is a couple of miles away. And Waterloo itself was much larger than we expected - a small city. It is a long walk from the hotel to the centre. Perhaps 2 miles. The owner makes his own beer - La Waterloise, which tasted very good to me. We dined happily at the Ma Belgitude restaurant serving reasonably priced belgian specialities. We got the train to Brussels, but take a car to the station because it is a further mile west of the town centre.
