“Can't see what the hype's about”

The Carolus is really difficult to rate. On the one hand, one does not wish to do the friendly propietors a disservice - on the other, I have to admit I felt a bit disappointed (after reading some of the raving reviews here) when I finally got there. The location of the hotel is certainly adequate and a novelty too...it shares its backyard with the famous Het Anker brewery by which it is owned. So no hard feelings there. The rooms, however, at least to me, were a major letdown. Furniture a tired reminiscence of the 80s, green pseudo-plush and dark veneer. The beds were ok, at least when you like them hard - which I do, coincidentally (it's better for my back). Bedsheets had a musty smell and at first I wasn't sure whether they were really fresh or not. Some unidentified stains on supplementary pillows ... yukk! The bathroom has seen better days, the shower curtain was new and the washbasin reasonably clean. I won't mention the idiotically placed toilet roll holder ... be ready for some impromptu callisthenics. What I really hated was the black mold in the shower mortar joints - stuff like that grosses me out and tells me that maidservice is lackluster to say the least. Breakfast was nice and I advise travelers to reserve a table at the Anker Brasserie for lunch or dinner. The authentic Flemish dishes are wonderful and service is very helpful. Do not miss out on their beers. Finally, the brasserie and the friendly service are all that save the Carolus from a poor review. In all kindness I cannot see how this hotel could be ranked second or third in all of Mechelen, though.

PROs
- location
- friendly proprietors
- free (although a bit cramped) parking
- very nice restaurant on premises
- free internet
- refrigerator in lobby
- hard beds

CONs
- uninspired, boring rooms
- grimy, grim bathrooms (mold!)
- less than enthusiastic maid service
- price seems too high for actual room value

Room Tip: No-all the rooms I could peep into looked the same

A delightful small family run hotel within walking distance of the town. Superb buffet breakfast and very attentive staff. They now have a newly refurbished brasserie open serving delicious foot and of course beer.

“Charming”

We stayed in this hotel on a recent business trip to Mechelen. The hotel itself is part of the Carolus Brewery ( unfortunately the brewery and brasserie is closed due to extensive refurbishment but this did not hinder us staying there.
The rooms are large but basic and emaculate as is the whole hotel . The staff are very friendly and provide you with plenty of information regarding the area. The breakfast which is included in the room rate is really nice with plenty to choose from.
On a whole this hotel has a nice friendly atmosphere and I would not hesitate in staying here again.. As the heading says just CHARMING

“A very cosy hotel with very kind staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 June 2010

This small hotel (about 20 rooms) is ideally situated at the edge of the city centre less than 10 min. walk from the ‘Grote Markt’. As long as you stay in the city centre there is no need to make use of the buses. The hotel has Its own free parking. It is part of Brewery ‘Het Anker’ and is called after the name of their beer ‘Carolus’. After my check in a drink was offered and I chose Carolus beer and I got the Classic one which is really marvelous. During my check in room number 5 was assigned to me, but when I told the clerk that I was a light sleeper, he offered me room 9 which is really a large and soundproofed double room (although I travelled alone). It has a large twin bed with rather good, not too soft mattresses. There are tea/coffee facilities (not common in continental Europe), a writing table, al large linen cupboard and a rather small TV with analog and digital channels. There is no fridgidaire nor airconditioning. The room looks into a quiet street. Bathroom has a rather large shower cubicle, a wash stand and toilet. There is only liquid soap. Room and bathroom are impeccable clean.
You enter your room through a terrace, where in summer you can have your breakfast, I guess. Breakfast is good and sufficient. Brown and white rolls, eggs boiled by yourself, meat products, cheese, youghurt, cereals, fruit-juices (not fresh), sweeties, etc. As far as I could see no English breakfast.
Staff is very kind and helpful. Check in and check out went very smoothly.
In the lounge there is free internet but because of the many viruses it is hardly possible to use the computer in a proper way.
All in all, the hotel is very recommendabel.

“Paradise -Hotel,brewery and restaurant all within a few yards!”

This hotel is situated on the Het Anker Brewery site and a 100 metres from their very popular restaurant. If you sample the brewery's products, and I recommend them, you will need to stay at their hotel as they are powerful ales and you will not be able to drive or even walk far after drinking them. They advise that one should not taste the whole range in one night else you will not make breakfast!. The hotel is an old building with spacious rooms. More utility than luxurious but always clean. Breakfast is a continental buffet. Reception staff friendly and full of useful advice. I advise ringing the hotel direct to get a reservation as various Hotel booking web sites will invariably say that no rooms are available or your email is not answered. A phone call usually overcomes this. Their restaurant is pricey . Our food experience is one of highs and lows. Their famous 'cuckoo' dish is in fact chicken - a speciality of Mechelen.
