Stayed at NH Mechelen on a corporate rate of an international client - I really needed a quiet place and good night's sleep for a long workshop the next day. But when I arrived, I found that the hotel was not at all a design place or the least stylish (as the website and the brand suggests). Instead, I found a dark, dreary, mouldy hotel - more like a typical "Golden Tulip", which it used to be. My room was very small, not at all even a three star standard. Terrible carpet, old-fashioned furniture, part of the wallpaper coming off the wall, colour peeling away etc. I took pictures because one might not believe it...
Of course, I complained with the night porter, who did not care the least, and only told me I could talk to the manager the next morning. Not showing the least understanding is certainly the worst of all possible reactions. Breakfast was very basic as well, and when I checked out, they even tried to charge breakfast extra although my rate said it was included. Because the receptionist had not shown me the invoice before charging my credit card, they even had to refund the ill-charged breakfast cash. My worst hotel experience in years!
My clear recommendation: Chose another hotel in Mechelen or rather stay in Brussels or Antwerp. And: If you ever book NH, make sure it's not a Golden Tulip in disguise!
