I have used the NH in Mechelen for many years on and off - starting when it was still the Alfa-Alba.
NH have done a good job of rennovating the hotel although I know that this is, as yet incomplete. I see other reviews on here pointing to the vast difference between rennovated and non-rennovated rooms, but I don't really see to much difference to be honest.
The hotel is good if in the city for business, but if it were for a special weekend away I think I might go elsewhere.
Competion in the city comes essentially from the Novotel (often full and very pricey), the Ve Hotel (botique and quirky - not my cup of tea) and the Gulden Anker (great restaurant, so-so rooms).
The NH is well priced compared to it's rivals, and offers free Wi-Fi, in 30 minute slots, in it's lobby. The connection is good.
Breakfast is a standard affair - nothing to write home about but does the job. The grill house restaurant "sort of" attached to the hotel, offers a limited fayre but is nicely done with friendly service.
The NH is my first choice of hotel in Mechelen when on business. It does the basics well. One small lift to serve all floors (or a VERY dodgy stairwell, verging on the dangerous), is a potential bottleneck.
Desk staff are always friendly and pretty efficient - no complaints.
