“Convenient but unremarkable - one step above a hostel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2008

I was recently in Rotterdam on a trip sponsored by some locals. They reserved this hotel for me with my only requirement being a non-smoking king bedroom. Fortunately the entire Hotel Emma is non-smoking so that was easy request to fulfill. Also, since my flight was arriving quite early I needed a morning check-in, which was also happily fulfilled.

The hotel is only 5-6 blocks from the train station and therefore a E7.50 cab ride but easily walkable. Likewise, the hotel was conveniently central in the city - right between Nieuwe and Oude Binnewieg. All of the hotel attendants spoke excellent English and were happy to give restaurant recommendations, input on directions and every other request I needed.

While I was very pleased with the convenience and the hospitality, the hotel itself is pretty unremarkable. I was amazed by the lack of outlets - only one that was available. Fortunately I brought adapters. As another reviewer stated, the heater is scaldingly hot or icy cold with no happy medium. Opening the window results in a small crack of fresh air and a rush of noise from the never-ceasing cafe, restaurant, train and hoodlum noise from the street below. Fortunately my Ambien won the battle but I can see how cranky I could have been.

Breakfast is also unremarkable - more like an American continental breakfast than the oft-glorified European spread. It was adequately filling and the coffee was hot, but certainly nothing I'd pay extra for if I would have had the luxury of time.

Finally, the hotel was very happy to overcharge for a few amenities that I have come to expect for free or negligible charges - E1.50 for a local call, E3.00 for a single Senseo coffee pod from the minibar, E29.95 for 1-week internet access, and most amazingly - you had to RENT the key to the safe!!!.

In summary, this place is fine as a place to sleep. It's safe, it's convenient and it has helpful staff. It's certainly not someplace to go for a special occasion, nor someplace I would have expected my boss to tolerate.

  • Liked — Convenience, friendliness of front desk staff
  • Disliked — Noise from street, mediocre breakfast, fees for everything, inadequate outlets

“An ideal place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2008

We had booked to stay at the Emma before reading the reviews left here, after reading them we were a little worried about what to expect but we were pleasantly surprised. On reaching the hotel we were greeted by a very charming young man who knew who we were, he was very helpful and later when we asked for an extra pillow it was supplied promptly and without fuss. The breakfast was quite OK and there was never anyone supervising apart from a young lady who cleared tables and refreshed the supplies as they got low. During our stay there were several different people on the reception, all of them without fail were friendly and courteous. The room was clean and well kept, the ceiling fan worked very efficiently and there was a window that could easily be opened, we had no problems at all with the temperature of the room. Coffee was free of charge in the room, although there was no facility for tea. On our last day we asked if we could leave our luggage and there was no problem with that, the young man on duty at that time even volunteered to check the train times for our journey home to save us the trouble of going to the station. Our stay was very pleasant and we will certainly be going back again if we ever visit Rotterdam in the future. The position of the hotel is perfect, the Metro is literally a few yards away and the shopping centre a gentle walk away.

“Nasty place, not hospitable at all.”

The location is nice, but there are much better options in this neighborhood. The room we got was very old and smokey, not at all like the info on the website. The breakfast was disappointing, the prepacked cakes were past their expiry dates. The man at the reception did nothing to explain or help, and when spoke to the manager the next morning, he was rude to us and wanted to make us pay an additional charge...! This is not a hotel, it is probably a money laundering business. Nasty place. We moved to the excellent Hotel Bazar, which was very nice.

  • Disliked — The way we were treated. Nasty.

“Very Poor”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2008

We have some relatives in Rotterdam and we were attending a huge wedding there. The hotel seemed located centrally which to be fair it is, but you can't imagine how rude the owner is and the cleaning staff. They never greet you with a smile. They're very stern and never ever helpful. When I wanted to confirm my airline reservation and I was asking the owner to assist me, he said, we're not a 5 star hotel and I don't help with such things. I don't know any Dutch and after insistance from my end, he finally gave me the number and told me to call them myself.
Also, at breakfast, they have a small buffet breakfast. The owner would watch our every move and every time I reached out to get some coffee or a bun, he'd give me such a look!! It's so embarrassing and it made me feel very self conscious although I really was not eating too much!! I even stopped having breakfast at the hotel and ate out to avoid the feeling of humiliation!!
My experience is very bad and depressing when I come to remember!! The only reason I didn't stay in a more expensive hotel is because we were staying for 3 weeks. We tried to move to another hotel but it was a busy time and there was not vacancies. Also, I told the owner that we're probably not coming back here again he didn't care!

In addition, the sheets were never changed unless we ask for it

Next time we will pay anything to avoid this hotel

“Loud and Hot”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2008

Travelled to Rotterdamn for a conference along with a co-worker. We arrived early and were not able to check in and were asked to sit in their lounge, which is pretty much just a landing with a two seat couch.

Finally got into the room but there was no A/C at all. Opened the window for at least a breeze and then it was horribly loud as it was facing the street with lots of cafes (plus a tram).

I ended up closing the window and opening the minibar to get something. We found another hotel a 30 min train ride away but still changed hotels.

The people are nice but the facilities are just not very comfortable at all.

  • Liked — Close proximity to cafes
  • Disliked — Noise and total lack of Air Conditioning
