“Could be worse - improvement needed! Cheap though.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 February 2011

I stayed in this hostel (as a single female traveller) for 4 nights in January.

To start with, if you've chosen to stay in a 20euro pppn hostel, you shouldn't have high expectations and this hostel is far from a disaster - I've paid far more for far worse. Bad points first - the "female dorm" was mixed every night, and the window didnt close (a lot of street noise). For me, the worst was the lighting in the bedroom and the bathroom were extremely poor, and although this was good when you're trying to sleep, it was pretty much impossible to pack/read/do anything. Room and bathroom were pretty badly furnished and not definately not clean.

HOWEVER, it's not all bad news for this hostel. There's a cosy lounge area upstairs with TV, sofas, tables, power sockets, and computers. Also, there's a great kitchen which is well stocked with staple foods (pasta, cheese, coffee etc) of which you can help yourself for free whenever you like. Breakfast buffet was cooked for you. This was invaluable when travelling on a shoestring budget.

Conclusion: Could be a very nice little city hostel, but right now, it definately needs improvement. With more effort from the staff to keep the place clean and repaired, and with better lighting, this could be a great budget hostel.

For the moment though, bring your own bedding and a torch.

“Multicultural, friendly stuff, best location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2010

I stayed there for 20 days. It was one of the best experiences I ever had. A lot of different people, laid back atmosphere, free food and internet and by far the best location you can get!

I surely recommend it!

“Certainly memorable!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2010

My stay here was organised by my teacher for the Holland Animation Film Festival. I shared a room with about 20 of my classmates and it was an experience I'll never forget.

The hostel's location was good for the festival and a short taxi ride from the station. Some of us went by coach and arrived earlier than the rest of the class, but reception couldn't seem to comprehend this. We had to wait around or venture out until 10 hours later when everyone else turned up, then finally we were allowed into our room. It was a large room on the top floor, crammed full of bunk beds. Water was dripping off the ceiling. Our sheets were clean, but you had to rent them separately. The cards for our door often didn't work and I had to see reception about it more than once. At least their English was good.

We were opposite another large room and there was only one toilet on our floor that we had to share. There were four showers, clean but not very warm, and a nice garden with tables, chairs and a large chess board, great for relaxing and smoking. Some of my classmates had to stay in a different room with complete strangers, they said the atmosphere was dire and no one talked to each other.

The hostel gave out free food, but the only thing edible was the fruit. They had bread, cheese and other continental breakfast type stuff. They provided pasta and other dried foods you could cook yourself in the tiny kitchen and you had to do your own washing up. One night they had a barbecue but I thought better of it. I ate out the whole time. They also had free beer and red wine.

By reception was a large television and plastic yellow sofas, a huge dining table and a bunch of musical instruments for anyone to play. Not good. It had a student atmosphere which is great for some but I prefer peace and quiet. There was free internet access but the computers were ancient with missing keys - have you ever tried to type without a spacebar?

Throughout our stay extensive refurbishment was going on. Downstairs had loud drilling and planks of wood by the entrance you had to step over, and on our floor the doors were being repainted. Unfortunately there was no wet paint sign until the final day of our stay. My friend's jacket was ruined. Winter seems like a good time to redecorate but surely the owner knew on this particular week the hostel would be extremely busy?

I can see why others gave such poor reviews, but for €18 a night you get what you pay for. I would recommend it for cash-strapped students like myself.
