This is a simply wonderful hotel. The service is outstanding. The room I had was very large with picture windows which provided light but could be closed off to make the room dark for a mid-day nap. The food and service in the Bistro were outstanding. The location is great-walking distance to the train station and most other attractions in town.
The hotel arranged for a taxi for me from the airport in Amsterdam. The rate was around half of what was on the meter, so this was a good deal. The hotel is also easily accessible from the airport by train and walking.

I did hear the church bells mentioned by another traveler during the afternoon and evening but I did not hear them late at night; either because they had turned them off or they were soft enough not to disturb sleep.

Excellently located old style hotel (with a modern annex which is where I stayed) in central utrecht. For a leasurely stroll around this beautiful city it just couldnt be located any better.
The staff is friendly and helpful, but not overly so.
I booked a room with a queen size bed, which turned out to be two singles put together with a very thin topmattres placed across them. Not exactly comfortable or indeed in line with what they advertised. The room is otherwise nice with standard amenities, but certainly not luxurious. No wifi in this part of the hotel (should however be available shortly according to the hotel staff) . Mediocre shampoo products filled into nice hotel-branded bottles. Bathtub not cleaned when I checked in - a big black rim around the edge where the previous occupant had had his/her bath (yikes). Aircon out of function (probably due to the winter season)- but windows also slightly leaky so quite a bit of street/parking lot noise.
The restaurant is very nice , they have both a low key brasserie, and a fancy michelin starred main restaurant. (btw do try the Blauw restaurant just across the street from the hotel - authentic indonesian cuisine at very affordable rates , and lively hip atmosphere).
Breakfast in the hotel is excellent and served in the main restaurant.
The fittness center is small but wellequipped, as is the spa (complimentary for hotel guests) - although the socalled pool is more of a small puddle with a jet-stream function. Also never got the "steam room" to operate - it is the size of a closet and you need to switch it on/off yourself).

All in all a nice decent hotel - highly priced - but certainly not 5 star as they advertise.

We spent 3 days in Karel V this Christmas. It is situated in a vey good spot within the old city. Friendly staff, spacious room, very interesting restoration of an old hospital. Only negative, their famous restaurant was closed on New Year's Eve

This hotel was a lovely surprise. For the price, I was amazed to see the large elegant rooms, the high quality food and wonderful staff. There is daily fresh fruit in the bedroom hallways with plates, napkins and silverware, a really nice touch. If you do use the minibar, the selections are high quality.
Location wise, Utrecht Central Station is within walking distance as is the charming old city. You can't go wrong at this hotel.
