The Tulip Inn in Hilversum has two facilities, a true Hotel and a separate Apartment structure. I've stayed in both over the last two years. The staff is the same for both and I have nothing but compliments for the staff. As one who doesn't speak Dutch, they have always been extremely patient, friendly, and helpful. Virtually everyone speaks fluent english in the Netherlands and many restaurants have an english translated menu if you ask.
Both buildings are located a few minutes walk from central Hilversum and the train station. They do not offer bike rentals, but you can rent them at the train station. Amsterdam is a 25 minute ride by train.
The Hotel is very clean and in a quiet area with non-smoking rooms available. The linens and towels were clean and changed often. The hotel restaurant is excellent but a bit expensive.
The apartments are a short walk away in an old three floor building. The setting is very beautiful especially in Spring. There is a well maintained garden on the grounds. The apartment building is locked so that only residents may enter. There is a self laundry on the first floor but the hotel also has a service that cost a bit more but is very convenient. Each room has a full bathroom with shower; small kitchen with stove top, microwave, refrigerator, sink, dishwasher; a living room with TV, radio, couch, dining table, and desk; and bedroom.
The only negative comments are that some of the apartment rooms are a bit abused. Most rooms have dents in the walls and could use a new coat of paint. In all the rooms I’ve stayed in, something didn’t work correctly, be it a light or stove top or running toilet. One room I stayed in my last trip had small holes in the walls, cigarette burns on the window sills, and squashed bugs on the walls. It obviously had not been cleaned well before I arrived. Most rooms are much cleaner and if you report the broken items the staff will have them fixed. My real complaint is that the staff does not thoroughly check a room over before a new guest arrives.
My other complaint is that the walls are thin in the apartments and I've had the bad luck to stay when young party goers are there making noise late into the night.
