Ideally situated, comfortable hotel.
Carlton Square is a large, somewhat old-stylish hotel ideally situated with on the one side Haarlem’s old city and on the other side the park Haarlemmerhout. Both, the general parts of the hotel and the rooms are equipped with a fabric covering. You enter the hotel either from the directly underlying parking (24,50 euro per 24 hrs.) or through the main entrance. The large entrance hall is connected with the restaurant where in the morning the breakfast is served. You also will find a business room with 4 computers which can be used for free. There are two elevators which connect you with one of the 122 rooms.
Staff is very kind and helpful, and check in/check out went very smoothly.
We occupied room 327, a large room with an excellent box spring double bed, a very good LCD TV with a lot of channels and a working table. There is also a mini bar and there are coffee/tea facilities which are replenished every day. Our room is situated above the main entrance and that is a problem. Although the windows are double glazed, there is rather much noise from outside. The more because in front of the hotel is a very large tree where some people feel the need to have some conversation at night. Moreover the room is very warm but you can not open a window because of the noise from outside. This means that especially the first night we did not sleep well. Although the room is very good, ask for a room at the rear if you are a light sleeper. As we booked this hotel as a ´secret saver´ at a special rate (the name is only released 48 hours before departure) we were not able to state any preferences.
The bathroom is rather large with a large wash stand, a bath tub with a good working shower and at least two towels per person. Soap and shower gel are standard amenities. Room and bathroom are very clean.
The hot/cold breakfast buffet is very good and very abundant: about seven kinds of bread and a variety of milk, meat and cheese products. There are several kinds of juices, cereals, jams and a variety of fesh fruit. It is possible to have lunch and diner in the restaurant or a simple meal in your room but we did not use it.
Apart from some problems with the room we occupied, the hotel is very recommendabel. The price of about 65,00 euro including breakfast (booked through hotelspecials) was very competitive. Be aware that if you do not book an all in price the breakfast is 18,50 euro.
Tip: we visited two very good restaurants; the first was an Italian one called Ristorante Napoli (Houtplein 1), the second an Indian one called Ghandi (Houtplein 2-b). Leaving the hotel go to the left and than again to the left.
