“A good place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2011

A good hotel conveniently located right by the rail station and also next to the shops, the hotel itself is very clean, and informal, the staff very friendly, and helpful.

The room itself was excellent and quiet at night.

The bar has a nice atmosphere, the food is very good and there is lots of it ! The steak came with a large side dish of fries and a side salad.

There are a number of excellent shops nearby, including a fantastic cheese store.

“Would not stay here again”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2010

Ended up staying here as it was booked for me by my company, I am quite happy to stay just about anywhere as long as it is clean and friendly. On arrival the check in was average and the person on the desk was less than helpful when I asked if he could book me a taxi to the airport for the next morning. Was told he had already booked a taxi for someone for the next morning and I should ask if I could share their one. It was not easy to find my room and was given no help from the reception, just told it was past the bar. On eventually finding my room it resembled a large garden shed on a roof with no internet, no AC and a window that nearly fell in on me when I tried to open it. I found the room to be noisy and did not get a great sleep, only thing I would recommend is the food.

“Not the best hotel in Den Helder but serves a purpose I suppose.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 May 2009

Having previously stayed at Hotel Den Helder I mistakenly booked myself into Hotel Wienerhof, a sister hotel.
There was no greeting at reception, just took my name and handed me the key to my room. I do think a friendly welcome at hotel receptions makes such a difference.
To get to the bedrooms you have to go by the restaurant toilets and into what looks like a service corridor. The lift is one of those rickety old style ones where the lift moves but there are no doors, just the door into the hallway, not pleasant. My room was on the first floor, beside the fire escape and rooftop area. I hate getting a room by a fire door because it is guaranteed to be a disturbed sleep. The rooftop is littered with large figures of characters such as Laurel and Hardy and given the position of my window gave me a scare when I thought there was someone peering into my room! The room itself was dark and very small indeed. To fit the loo, shower tray and sink into the miniscule ensuite they had elevated the loo on a platform overhanging the shower tray, something I've never seen before! The walls are very thin and the hotel is noisy - the stairwell to the 2nd floor bedrooms is from the rooftop garden and crosses the bedroom window, a definite lack of privacy and comfort.
There is a pleasant seating area at the front of the hotel, I ate here one evening in the sunshine. The only beer is Grolsch, ugh. The food was tasty and the breakfast buffet was typical of Netherlands and perfectly adequate.
I like Den Helder, the town centre is quaint and the train station is beside the Wienerhof. I didn't find the Winerhof welcoming or comfortable and I didn't feel safe in the room as a solo female traveller. I was travelling on business and other than a single computer station to the side of the restaurant there is no internet access. I wouldn't stay here again.

“Look elsewhere”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 May 2008

This would be a fine hotel for a young person traveling by bus or train and on a limited budget. It has a very odd layout. You must go thru a smokey bar to get to reception. You then go to the back of the smokey restaurant where staff take breaks, thru a door, down a hall past the back of the kitchen to reach the elevator. The only room available was in the front over the outside patio and opposite the bus station. It rained at night, so the patio was not used, but we still heard the busses. Light bulbs so dim you cannot read a book with fine print. Huge bath tub, but to reach the faucets, you have to climb across the tub. No shower curtain, so water goes everyplace. Toilet dripped all night. Requested repairs and better light - nothing done. Did not feel especially safe. Walls paper thin. People next door had trouble with their lock and we could hear as they worked to secure it. Internet okay for small fee. Breakfast extra and not worth 10 euros. Parking free at supermarket 4 blocks away or pay lot (one hr max) behind hotel. Free 6pm -9am. We were offered another room the next day - no desk and view of the kitchen dumpster - so we declined. Checked out as soon as possible 2nd morning.

  • Liked — Room was reasonably large
  • Disliked — poor location, poor layout, no parking, noisy
