I've stayed here about six times from 2007-2010 and have experienced the best and worst it has to offer. The location is good, you don't get hassled by anyone unlike around hotels near the red light district, but it is quite a walk from the centre, though to be fair it's a nice walk especially in the summer and the price often justifies it. The hotel stairs are the same as 99% of stairs in Amsterdam, so that can't really be held against them.
The hotel's owners have always been excellent(though it has changed owners during the time I've stayed there). Checking in is a simple process and when the room wasn't ready, they always offered to look after the baggage (even when we arrived at 8.30am) and had the room ready within an acceptable time. The rooms aren't the best but acceptable, on one occasion 3 of us were put in a 2 bed room with an extra mattress on the floor(but the price took the sting out of this) but on another occasion we had a 4 bed room for 3 of us, which was on the first floor overlooking the coffeeshop and was pretty big. The bathrooms aren't the best, but similar to most hotels in Amsterdam. There is some noise from the road, but it's more tolerable than staying in the City centre with the church bells going off at the crack of dawn.
Overall, considering stays in other hotels in Amsterdam, I would recommend this hotel to a friend, but only if this price was under or around 30 euro each per night. Some people may think the hotel isn't the best, but considering the standard in Amsterdam budget hotels, this is above average.
