“Central and cheap, but an unpleasant place to stay”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

Chose this "hotel" as it seemed the most central of the many Amsterdam hostels pretending to be a hotel when you search online. It's not a hotel in any way, shape or form.
On the plus side, it was very central and Amsterdam itself is stunningly beautiful. Reviewers moaning about the steep stairs and the fact that some of the staff didn't speak English, should maybe go and stay in an English-speaking country. There was a working colour TV with several channels on in my room (203).
Negatives:
Room was not very clean - toothpaste and other stains on sink and decor in general was unkempt.
My window was in fact actually a glass pane leading on to a housekeeping cupboard, so I could not look outside or air my room at all. The housekeeping cupboard must have led to a skylight as natural light came in, but also a lot of draught, which made the room cold at times. There was no heater to warm the room/dry your things on when it rained.
Despite the signs warning guests that they would be fined for smoking in the rooms, I could smell normal cigarettes and cannabis being smoked regularly from other rooms in the corridor, along with loud music and drunken yelling. This made it difficult to sleep, especially as the housekeeping cupboard that adjoined my room was only locked with a small cheap padlock and I was constantly afraid of someone breaking in as a drunken prank.
I would definitely not recommend this hotel for female solo travellers and made sure I noted down the names of as many decent looking hotels as possible while I was there so I never have to stay here again!

“DAM [--] HOTEL. PLEASE READ”

To start off our horrible experience with the Dam Hotel...they put us in a separate hotel called the orange tulip, it had steep curved staircase and when we asked the reception man to help us with our bags he said no. we got put into room 107, it was small and the tv didn't work and there was no wi-fi. We called into our room the next day and there was a random Chinese guy just stood there and didn't speak a word of English. The room was so cold we had no sleep, it felt like there window was wide open. Also there seemed to be someone doing DIY in the middle of the night because all we could here was a constant banging. We spent one night in there and by the next day we asked to changed rooms.
We changed to room 305 in another building, it was warmer than the first room but as soon as we opened the bathroom we were nearly sick with the disgusting stench coming from the vent in the ceiling. it smelt like there was a dead pigeon stuck in the roof or something. when you turned the light on the vent started going automatically so you could always smell this weird smell. we walked into our room one afternoon, the tv was on, the window was wide open and they hadn't even changed our bed sheet.

DO NOT STAY HERE IT IS [--] DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“WORST HOTEL EVER! AND I NEVER WRITE REVIEWS, but its so bad I HAVE TO”

Me and my boyfriend basically booked to go amsterdam last minute for a one day business trip, we didn't want to spend a lot of money so we picked the cheapest, alright looking one. When we got there, we booked for Budget Dam Hotel, but the name had changed to a different name. Its in a good location but the hotel is disgusting, it has a foul stench throughout the hotel and the rooms were small and dirty. We obviously knew we was going to get something cheap, but what happened over night was disgusting. We both slept, and while sleeping, i woke up twice and saw TWO different BUGS walking around the bed, we swept it off and thought nothing of it, until i woke up with an ITCHY RASH on my neck. It itched so badly, we left the hotel, and during the day, the rash got worst and it spread all over my arms and my body. I had an allergic reaction to all the BED BUG BITES from that hotel, I couldn't go to work and the itching was so bad its unbearable. Still itching now, and its been a week, a few days after we came back, the bites and rashes started to come up on my boyfriends body, incredibly itchy and irritating and disgusting. We wanted a cheap hotel, and we can deal with untidy and dirty, BUT BUGS biting you while you sleep is unacceptable. DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL!! THE PRICE IS NOT WORTH THE BUGS AND THE BITES! I'VE READ OTHER REVIEWS AND PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM! I'VE NEVER WRITTEN A REVIEW ABOUT ANYWHERE BEFORE I HAVE ABOUT THIS HOTEL JUST BECAUSE ITS SO DISGUSTING AND I WOULDNT WISH THE ITCHY BITES AND RASHES ON ANYONE ELSE. ME AND MY BOYFRIEND STILL HAVE THE RASHES AFTER A WEEK! SO PICK ANOTHER HOTEL, ANYYYYYY HOTEL.

Room Tip: don't pick any!

“Total dump”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2011

It doesn't matter how much everywhere else costs in Amsterdam compared to this place, DO NOT STAY HERE! It's really disgusting - I mean, really dreadful. Try and sum up an image of the worst hotel you can - filthy stairs above a cheap pizza shop leading to a dodgy man behind a perspex screen unable to find your reservation. Tiny, dirty public areas and don't even think about entering the rooms. Even the [---] students looked unhappy to be there. Gross, should have it's license revoked.
