I was so pleased with every aspect of this charming bed and breakfast. Ken and Vlad are wonderful hosts! The email communication leading up to the trip was always prompt, thorough, and helpful, which really alleviated stress in planning my first visit to Amsterdam, the first stop of a month-long journey. And throughout my stay I was charmed by the attention to detail: from the initial welcome and tour to communal breakfasts and the general functioning of the house, it truly felt like a home away from home!
The Heren House is on Singel Canal off Herenstraat, a picturesque, safe, and quiet area a short walk from literally everything. An old canal house with tall ceilings and a marble entrance way, it has been completely renovated in a clean and modern style. The house is beautiful, well-maintained, and cozy with a shared living room with large windows overlooking the canal, two kitchens, and a shared dining room where everyone convenes for breakfast.
I had the room pictured on the website (orange and black) with radiant floor heating and a large private restroom with shower and deep bath (nice after walking around in the cold city all day). It was very spacious and tranquil.
Of course all the amenities are included—WiFi, flat screen television (with a considerable amount of English-speaking channels), and of course the gourmet breakfast: a variety Dutch pastries and breads, fresh fruit, hard-boiled eggs, croissants (specially ordered to arrive fresh daily from France), granola, yogurt, cereal, fruit, coffee, tea… The house help is fantastic—sneaking in quietly to prepare the feast then spending the afternoon cleaning and maintaining the house.
Amsterdam is an amazing city, and the Dutch people are friendly and gracious. Staying at this B&B heightened the experience on all levels. If I have the chance to return to Amsterdam, I will definitely be contacting Ken and Vlad again, and in the meantime, I’ll be referring friends and family.
Enjoy your stay!
Note: I stayed here the end of December through the beginning of January, a really fun time to visit Amsterdam. It’s still lit up with beautiful holiday lights, and the Dutch celebrate Old and New (NYE) like no other! There are literally fireworks everywhere, and they began before I arrived on the 29th and continued a couple days into the New Year. For the big night, people convene in the squares like Museumplein but Vlad had recommended that I avoid that crowd and instead join the locals who stream from their house celebrations out onto the canal bridges. It was a true delight!
