my family stayed for one night only...good things are central location for all sight seeing places in AMSTERDAM ,very near to central railway station and there is near by taxi stand from where u can get a taxi any time,few bad points ,very steep stairs to climb ,rooms are not so worth as per their price ,thanks to our location of room we had a toilet in front of room but a common one,room was not ready when reached at around 3..book only if u have to stay for one night and that too in urgency...

I booked Hotel Galerij after reading the largely negative reviews, on the basis it was cheapest (on Expedia) at the time and I just needed somewhere to crash. The place looked cleaner than I was expecting - no noticable body-fluid stains on the carpet or walls, and the bedding, towels looked OK.. Certainly not luxurious in any way, and lacked hotel basics like TV.

The infamous stairs are a daunting sight and not for travellers with much luggage. There were some 80 year-olds staying at same time as me and they managed to the make it to the top floor OK so stairs look worse than they are.

The place is very noisy - sounds of other guests were disturbing, and the church bells seemed to ring every 30 minutes 24x7. Bring ear-plugs and you'll be OK. I didn't have any...

Although the place *looks* clean, I woke up scratching and left with multiple insect bites. Bed bugs or some other nasties I guess.

The staff were friendly enough.

Shared toilet, bathroom, clean enough. Shower door did not lock.

The location is excellent - just off Dam Square.

All in all not a pleasant experience but not catastrophic. Fine if you just want to crash for a few nights and have expectations set low in advance.

If I could have given this hotel zero stars, believe me I would. This hotel is summed up in 2 words- A DUMP. The first thing that greets you when you walk in the door is 100 extremely steep steps, don't even bother attempting them if you have luggage! That wouldn't be a problem if the hotel wasn't so grubby. The carpet is absolutely filthy, do NOT walk around your room without your shoes. The window in our room had a crack in it (I was there in November, so cold and rainy) , and the harsh winds created a draft in the room- my boyfriend almost got hypothermia. The heater was not on half the time, and to top it all off- while we were trying to warm up by taking a shower, the rude receptionist starting banging on our door and saying that water was leaking downstairs. As if it was our fault, we weren't even allowed to take showers in our own room, and had to use the common ones in the hall. There were even bloodstains on the mattress. When we brought up all of our concerns to the receptionist, all we got was "If you don't like it you can leave. No refund will be given." Absolute worst "hotel" I have ever been to. If you don't believe me, look at the photos I have attached. Please don't be stupid like we were- spend a few extra bucks and sleep somewhere where you're not worried about cockroaches!

A group of 6 of us stayed at the Galerij for 3 nights a stag party. My friend who booked it got us a good deal on the hotel which didn't cost the earth. We found the hotel to be slightly basic but very clean and comfortable (beds fine with plenty of running hot water for the showers), basically what we were looking for as a base and place to crash at night. Only 2 of us made it up for breakfast one of the days which I understand wasn't up to much (bread and jam) but the excellent Sara's Pancake house was next door and Jennifer's Croissanterie across the road also so we didn't starve! The location of the hotel was ideal, less than 10 minutes walk to Dam Square and 2 mins from the Anne Frank Museum and canal cruise stops. The hotel is on quite a busy thoroughfare, our room was quite warm so we kept the window open at night and were woken by the trams which seemed to start at 5 am and church bells which went on the half hour! We were on the top floor, as other reviewers have said the stairs are a nightmare, the 1st staircase which greets you at the front door which takes you to reception is quite an imposing site! I would certainly stay here again, I wouldn't necessarily take my wife for a romantic break here for for group parties looking a base to explore the city at reasonable cost it was ideal.
