“Nice location, no surprises”

We arrived in Amsterdam jet-lagged in the morning. We went to the hotel hoping to at least be able to drop off our bags. We were delighted when they offered to us check in early at 9:30 and then offered us breakfast too. We were refreshed after a little food and a short nap.

The room was small (to be expected in Amsterdam) and spartan. But the bed was comfortable and the room was quiet. No other room amenities. But we don't travel to watch tv and we have our own cellphones, so why pay for those things? Breakfast was simple, but filling. In the dining room you will find a collection of guide books.

We loved, loved the location in the Jordaan neighborhood! As soon leaving the hotel, it was easy to find a nice restaurant or pub or interesting shop that locals visited as well as tourists. It was a treat to walk the nearby streets and see how people live in this cool city. It's around a 20 min walk to train station.

There were some random photos of Anthony Perkins decorating the walls. Wish I could have figured out the connection.

Room Tip: Canal side - top floor

“holyday in amsterdam”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

nice hotel, clear, good position, and thin room, like all the building in amsterdam. we were in the 2 floor in a double room without tv, the breakfast is good, if you are searching a hotel close the centre, only 10 min from dam square, with a good price... i think that van onna is the best choice.

“lovely attic room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

Hotel Van Onna is in a peaceful area on a beautiful canal, close to the city centre but not in the touristic, noisy places.
We stayed 3 nights, the first in the big attic room, then in a smaller attic room, both on the top floor. (i booked in advance). Each attic room is full of windows. The room is perfect if you don't mind a lot of steps! The bathroom is basic (except the view!) but clean. The bed linen was so thin that was ripped in the night! It was funny and we had a new one the day after.
Breakfast is simple but very good.

“Wow”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

I've been to Amsterdam a few times and have gotten accustom to paying 200 to 300 euro's for a decent centrally located room usually without a direct canal view. Hotel Van Onna was a fraction of the price and we had the most spectacular view of a canal you can imagine. We were there on a beautiful spring day and it was so nice sitting in bed watching the city float by that we had a hard time actually leaving the room. Yes, the hotel looks like an old sailors quarters and probably hasn't been updated much since that time period but the beds are comfortable, the rooms are clean, the breakfast is great, the location is fantastic, and the view is worth substantially more than what they are charging. I'm sure I'll be back in Amsterdam and I'm sure this is the first place I'll try and find a room.

“Aloof, hidden and convenient.”

The hotel is very basic (rooms appear institutional, not well appointed) and not particularly good value for money spent. There are lots of steps to climb. The management charges an additional 5% if you use your credit card. The breakfast is good and they provide enough to eat. The location is excellent being close to 2 tram lines, one at either end of the street.
HARD TO FIND. When we first arrived we walked down many streets from the tram station and no one in the area could tell us where Bloemgracht street was. Here is an easy way to find the place. Stand in front of the main entrance of the Anne Frank house and look across the canal. The street you see is Bloemgracht (notice the right side and left side of this street). Cross the canal at the nearest bridge and walk to this same street that you saw from the Anne Frank house.Walk down the right side (with the canal on your left) for about 5 minutes... Van Onna Hotel is on the right.

Room Tip: Read my tip for finding the place... it will save a lot of frustration.
