First, let me say that any shortcomings in this hotel are more than made up by the amazing location. Prisengracht is a very pretty canal and the neighborhood is families and small cafes and bistros. An Albert Hein (grocery store) is about 1 1/2 blocks away, Anne Frank House is a few blocks down the canal, West Church, North Church are easy walk as is the Rijksmuseum, Spui, Dam, Floating Flower stalls, etc. It is about three or four blocks from Leidenstratt tram so it is easy to get back and forth to the station. I do not think you can stay at a better location unless you want to be literally in the middle of all the noise and crowds !
You will want to spend your time exploring the city and won't want to spend a lot of time sitting in your hotel room, and this is the perfect place to base your self if you can live with the less than perfect room.
Although the lobby and breakfast room and sitting room have lots of antiques and are charming, my double room was rather spartan. Maybe some of the other rooms are nicer. A mattress that was more like a giant sponge, a shower that could use a good dose of Chlorox to remove the black mildew in every crevice, and barely enough room for one person's stuff. Daily maid service provided change of towels but I couldn't see evidence hat any actual cleaning (ie, of bathroom) was done. View from my room was into the "smoking area" in between the other buildings of this rambling hotel. Walls were thin and i could hear people in the rooms above and below and to the side of me, but even on the weekend no one was too loud too late. Breakfast was two kinds of bread, two kinds of cheese, two kinds of cold cuts, canned peaches, hard boiled eggs, OJ, milk, coffee and tea. Oh, and to confirm other reviews, the stairs are VERY steep, narrow, winding and rather scary to carry luggage down two flights (and I am not averse to stairs - but these were excessively difficult)
Staff was polite but I never saw the same people two times in a row, over my three night stay. I hear this place is family run, but not sure if any of the staff I saw were part of the family.
Room Tip: There are a few rooms that overlook the canal - but I think the vast majority do not.

Dear Ms.,
I am sorry to read that your room was not cleaned the way we think it should be done. Please let me know when you were here exactly and in what room you were so that I can find out who the cleaner was?
Did you let my people at the front-desk know about this problem? If so, what was done about it?
Thank you much for your review and I hope to see you in my hotel on another trip to Amsterdam.
Kind regards,
John Boddy, manager.
