“Excellent location; very comfortable stay”

I stayed here four years ago (business) and, when I had to plan a trip for a small group (pleasure), felt confident that the hotel would suit everyone's needs. It's perfectly positioned to walk in a leisurely way to all the main attractions and in the morning, looking out of the breakfast room directly on to a bridge over Prinsengracht is a real pleasure. Rooms are very comfortable and though they are not completely up-to-date with the latest wardrobes, everything is spotlessly clean, the beds are comfy, the digital TV has plenty of channels to keep you in touch with home (if you need to do that) and the water is always hot. The staff are courteous and there's always someone at reception to greet you, as well as the old house dog, who is very sweet if a little immobile.
The location is truly excellent. Within a hundred yards are in one of Festina Lente or Het Molenpad, two excellent brown pubs/bars, both with restaurant-quality food. The beer's not bad either! Meanwhile, if you go down any of the roads pointing towards Herengracht then you will stumble into any of a myriad of boutiques, antique shops or small restaurants.

Room Tip: If staying on a Friday night you will experience some minor canalside night noise, but it is tolerab...

“Great Location, Friendly Staff, Nice Dog, and Wonderful Breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

This is the perfect location hotel for getting around Amsterdam on foot. Lots of museums and restaurants within easy walking distance (a few blocks to the Anne Frank House and a 20 minute walk to the Van Gogh Museum) make this place ideal. Had a great room overlooking the canal and the hotel staff very accommodating. Steps are steep (it's a canal house hotel), so pack light! Also, the rooms can get warm (no air conditioning) and I visited in April 2011 when they were having unseasonably warm weather. Get a room with lots of windows (in the front) to get a nice breeze; otherwise you'll incubate on the upper floor back rooms. And the hotel has an arrangement with a cab driver to get you to the airport so you don't get ripped off.

“Great Great Great Small Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

If you are looking for something different than the big hotel chains which are all the same - go for the Wiechman - family type, great lobby - lovely canal view rooms, clean, large - perfect location just on the corner of the 9th street block - great value for money

The breakfast can be a bit better - add some decent coffee and yogurts and it will be perfect

Room Tip: Room 136 is perfect as the strairs are big

“Perfect location”

The hotel is in the perfect location for visiting anywhere in Amsterdam. We could easily walk to all the sights recorded by other reviewers. The decor and furnishings of our bedroom and the public areas and the steep stairs added to the Dutch experience and were really appreciated. We had a double room with canal view on the third floor and we were very comfortable.
The downstairs toilet, lounge, breakfast room and our bed and bathroom were clean and well maintained. There was an ample supply of very hot water even on the top floor. Breakfast was adequate and it was good to watch Amsterdam cycling to work in the mornings. It was pleasant to sit and drink tea with friends and read in the lounge.
All in all the three day stay enhanced our enjoyment of Amsterdam. It was great. All the staff were friendly and helpful and the dog was no problem
I suppose, if you were not fit, you should request a room on a lower floor!

Room Tip: Choose a room with a view and bear in mind the steps are traditional and very steep (48 to third flo...

“Perfect location, just don't spend much time in your room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

First, let me say that any shortcomings in this hotel are more than made up by the amazing location. Prisengracht is a very pretty canal and the neighborhood is families and small cafes and bistros. An Albert Hein (grocery store) is about 1 1/2 blocks away, Anne Frank House is a few blocks down the canal, West Church, North Church are easy walk as is the Rijksmuseum, Spui, Dam, Floating Flower stalls, etc. It is about three or four blocks from Leidenstratt tram so it is easy to get back and forth to the station. I do not think you can stay at a better location unless you want to be literally in the middle of all the noise and crowds !

You will want to spend your time exploring the city and won't want to spend a lot of time sitting in your hotel room, and this is the perfect place to base your self if you can live with the less than perfect room.

Although the lobby and breakfast room and sitting room have lots of antiques and are charming, my double room was rather spartan. Maybe some of the other rooms are nicer. A mattress that was more like a giant sponge, a shower that could use a good dose of Chlorox to remove the black mildew in every crevice, and barely enough room for one person's stuff. Daily maid service provided change of towels but I couldn't see evidence hat any actual cleaning (ie, of bathroom) was done. View from my room was into the "smoking area" in between the other buildings of this rambling hotel. Walls were thin and i could hear people in the rooms above and below and to the side of me, but even on the weekend no one was too loud too late. Breakfast was two kinds of bread, two kinds of cheese, two kinds of cold cuts, canned peaches, hard boiled eggs, OJ, milk, coffee and tea. Oh, and to confirm other reviews, the stairs are VERY steep, narrow, winding and rather scary to carry luggage down two flights (and I am not averse to stairs - but these were excessively difficult)

Staff was polite but I never saw the same people two times in a row, over my three night stay. I hear this place is family run, but not sure if any of the staff I saw were part of the family.

Room Tip: There are a few rooms that overlook the canal - but I think the vast majority do not.

Dear Ms.,

I am sorry to read that your room was not cleaned the way we think it should be done. Please let me know when you were here exactly and in what room you were so that I can find out who the cleaner was?
Did you let my people at the front-desk know about this problem? If so, what was done about it?

Thank you much for your review and I hope to see you in my hotel on another trip to Amsterdam.

Kind regards,

John Boddy, manager.
