“Don't stay there”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

I just read the review of thefreefa11 and wish it had been published before I made the mistake of booking. I suffered a similar experience from the receptionist who insisted on cash up front for my 3 night stay. Nowhere was this mentioned on their website or the booking company's website and a subsequent check showed that they accepted all CC's. Being a late Sunday afternoon none of the cash machines in the locality had cash so I offered to pay the following day but he refused and insisted that he had to have full payment by 6.00pm. This immediately rang alarm bells so I asked to see the room which he reluctantly showed me - the very room thefree11 stayed in. It was awful and nothing like those that you see on their website. A slight disagreement followed and I guess he thought he had me over a barrel being late on Sunday with most hotels full. Anyway he demanded full payment in cash there and then or I could leave. Needless to say after a few more heated exchanges I left and found room in the NH City Centre. I thought that was the end of it and enjoyed a very pleasant stay with my wife and daughter. It was only when I returned home that I found out that he had put in a demand for several thousands of pounds on my CC. It was shown as a pending amount and remained on my account for over a week. He had threatened to charge me for one nights stay which I immediately disputed as it was he who was being totally unreasonable and it was he who left me little choice but to leave. I would not have stayed in the place anyway because the whole set-up just looked so unprofessional and I just didn't trust him. I am absolutely staggered at some of the positive reviews and wonder did I enter the wrong door but no it was definitely the Hotel Clemens. What they did was tanatmount to attempted fraud but thankfully they never followed through - clever because neither I or the Bank have the evidence to pursue legally! I doubt whether they actually intended to take such a large sum - just to screw up my credit limit in the hope that I could not use my card in Amsterdam! They failed and I was just thankful that I did not find out until I got home otherwise they would have succeeded in ruining an otherwise pleasant stay.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback regarding our hotel. We are certainly disappointed that your stay was not all that it could have been.

After several returning serious complains towards the same member of our staff we finally filled enough complains (also thanks to Tripadvisor.com) to reorganise our staff what leaded that the negative staff member is no longer working in our hotel. This will definitely mean that complains like this will no longer be happening in the future and that a stay in Hotel Clemens will be one of the most pleasant stays you can have in Amsterdam.

We sincerely regret the negative experience you had in our hotel and we hope you would give us the possibility to show you the improvements during a future visit to Amsterdam.

Once again please do accept our apologies and we do hope that the remainder of your trip to Amsterdam was most enjoyable

“shocking arrogant' violent Even french guy/owner is a D!$K head”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

Dear potential future customers
I strongly advice you not wanting to call you that anymore after reading all previous recommendations including mine:
I stayed at this hotel with two friends for three nights just after Christmas 2011 and had a trip from hell.
On arrival we were greeted by the apparent owner. Without a word of welcome he requested not 1 passport as proof of identity but the passports from all 3 of us.as this is unusual We simply wanted to know why he suddenly needed the passports. He stated that all English are trouble makers and when we pointed out we where Scottish and remained to stay very friendly but he hit the roof and told us we weren’t staying there and he was keeping our first nights money as he had to wait around till half ten for our arrival. When trying to calm him down he became threatening and we had to call hotel runners, through which we booked this hotel.
When talking to the very helpful and nice person at hotel runners he kept pointing out that he needed our passports PLUS he was keeping the first day’s deposit and wanted us out since all English people are trouble
Upon repeatedly pointing out that we weren't English but Scottish he went ballistic and became threatening to a point where we felt endangered!
We tried to explain that we weren't going to ruin his place not that it was spectacular in any way to start with. he kept on ranting about Englishmen and how they were bad for his business.
After continuing to point out that he needed to stop his rant since we weren’t going to demolish anything he threw us out or rather tried…since on the other line the hotel runner team member managed to calm him down eventually by taking full responsibility for any unlikely damages to the hotel through us. Had he not managed to let us stay at Hotel Clement we would have been stranded in Amsterdam without a hotel, hostel or anywhere to sleep since the city's accommodations were all fully booked (which the hotel runner’s member had checked first thing).
Although the hotel was really uncomfortable and quite the opposite of clean it was better than having to camp in the open!
Our first night was very awkward since we felt that we not only shared a room with one another but with the other guests too thanks to the paper thin walls and ceilings but after finally falling asleep, we were woken by a non English speaking cleaner who requested to clean our room. Although she didn't speak English we made clear that any cleaning was not requested and thought that she had understood since she left.
After venturing out into the buzzing city we returned to the room - which had been cleaned and our bags had been moved. I believe that it should be clear that if guests do not wish their rooms to be cleaned whilst in the rooms the rented out rooms should stay locked whilst out!
After yet another almost sleepless night, thanks to the mentioned wall thickness and nastily mattresses we were really looking forward to a hearty breakfast or at least something edible to kick start the day. Expecting to find the dining room open we found ourselves standing in front of an empty room with all edible things removed. Asking where the food was available until …….. not sure about the time …… he told us that we had missed the timeslot and that he wasn’t willing to extend it for people that slept in – not taking into account that the sign behind him pointed out that the buffet was actually still running according to the time. Nevertheless we still had a great time in Amsterdam apart from our hotel.
We are all very happy we had only booked three nights at this place and cannot recommend this hotel to anyone unless you want to experience the extremes!

Room Tip: just don't stay here. we had the cramp room behind the reception/lounge that you where not aloud...

Regarding the cleaning of your room we also sincerely apologize. Our own housekeeping staff member was at that time on Christmas holidays and we were working with a professional cleaning company which unfortunately turned out not to be professional at all. Any coming holidays of our staff members in the future will be covered by members of our own staff.

The thickness of the walls as well as the quality of the mattresses will very soon be replaced.

We sincerely regret the negative experience you had in our hotel and we hope you would give us the possibility to show you the improvements during a future visit to Amsterdam.

Once again please do accept our apologies and we do hope that the remainder of your trip to Amsterdam was most enjoyable.

“Pleasantly surprised.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2011

Reception stayed open until after 10pm as I had a late flight arrival. Bedroom compact & bijou. Clean linen, fridge, tv, towels all provided. A kettle would have been nice but Jennifer's across the street happy to serve tea takeaway. Close to all amenities i.e. station, palace, dam square, rembrandtplein, shopping, restaurants, coffee shops, Ann Frank's house & walking distance to the museums. Shared bathroom spotlessly clean & well stocked, as was the shower room. As much as you can eat buffet breakfast.
Plenty to dislike - steep, narrow staircase; traffic noise & regular chiming church clock but this added to the Amsterdam atmosphere. If you're looking for a budget break & can cope with a few stairs, this place is for you!

Thank you very much for your lovely feedback regarding the experience you had in our hotel.

Your idea of a kettle in your room will definitely be considered and till then complementary coffee and tea will stay available in the reception/breakfast area from the early morning until the later evening.

Once again we would like to thank you for taking the time to share your experience with future travellers and giving us the opportunity to keep improving our service and facilities. We hope to welcome you again in our nice city.

“Took a creditcard authorisation to reserve room and STILL gave our room away!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2011

After days of searching this site for a hotel in A'dam with a GOOD review (is there any??)....
We found hotel crap-mens. What a mistake.

4 days before we got to amsterdam my partner had given the hotel her creditcard for the authorisation to hold the room. all fine and dandy.

After a long train trip to get there followed by a afternoon tour, all we want is to crash out in our room. We get to hotel clemens and they have given our room away. It seemed the creditcard thing isn't good enough.

This left us with nowhere to sleep on a sat night in amsterdam. The hostel service confirmed no vacancy in the whole city. We ended up busting down to den haag to the awesome stayok backpackers there. Definitely recommend the stayok chain!!

Alone in A'dam at night with nowhere to sleep is very freaky. Might be ok if you're a drugger... but we're not!

I can confirm the stairs are horrendous. I would have hated to have large bags there.
Also, the clerk guy is a jerk.

Can't comment on the room, as we didn't get there.

If you book here;
- have a backup plan.
- I wouldn't trust them enough to do a pre payment in full.
- double, triple, quadruple check that your room is held for you!

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback regarding our hotel. We are certainly disappointed that you were not able to stay with us. A credit card guarantee is absolutely enough to reserve a room in our hotel so we sincerely apologize that the room was no longer available by the moment you arrived and that there was no staff member willing to solve this serious matter for you.

After several returning serious complains towards this same member of our staff we finally filled enough complains (also thanks to Tripadvisor.com) to reorganise our staff what leaded that the negative staff member is no longer working in our hotel. “good budget hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2011

this was the cheapest hotel we found, even cheaper than all the hostels we looked at.

took us in without prior booking and was much "safer" than the hostel we stayed in the previous night.

had an issue with a lost bracelet - was dropped in reception returned within minutes and it had "vanished" forever. only staff member present.

was late for breakfast one morning and they let us have some on plates to take too our room which we though was great as they didnt have too.

but in general, was very good and the room was lovely.

would defo go again.

Thank you very much for posting this review.

We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you appreciated our improvised late breakfast solution.

We do regret the fact that you lost a bracelet in our breakfast room. Please let us know how it looked so we can maybe find it in our lost and found.
