“Great weekend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 February 2011

I went there for a weekend in February, though the stairs were very steep the rooms were good for the price and the staff were very helpful. They gave us a map on arrival of the local area and bikes are rented (far cheaper then hire places in the town) which were of a good condition. I highly recommend staying here for a budget holiday.

“Great value, mind the stairs”

My wife and I stayed at the Bicycle Hotel on Van Ostadestraat in De Pijp on our budget honeymoon tour of Europe last September. We were warmly greeted by Gerald and given "the romantic room." I'm not sure if this is specifically the romantic room but our room was cute, comfortable enough, and very purple. We sprang for our own bathroom which, while small, was immaculately clean. The most worrysome characteristic of the hotel (and also one of the most charming) was the stairs. My wife and I were grateful that we had backpacks as the stairs were shallow, near vertical, and turn as you go up. This staircase is not for the faint of heart nor those with bad knees.

Breakfast in the morning was continental plus meaning it had cereals, pastries, milk juice, coffee machine and toast but we were also given ham and a nice gouda to go on our toast along with a wide selection of spreads/jellies/jams. We ate well enough and headed out into the city to explore. We liked that bicycles are available for rent (though we did not partake).

This is a fantastic base hotel to stay in if you are looking for a clean, friendly hotel to stay in and don't need (or want to pay for) all the frills. The location while not in the middle of everything, is very close to the Albert Cuypmarkt and only a block or two from several tram/bus stops which will get you back to the city center and Amsterdam Centraal within 5-10 mins depending on where you are looking to go.

We will stay here again next time we're in Amsterdam.

“We wanted to move after 1 night”

My husband and I went to Amsterdam for our 2nd Anniversary and we selected this hotel after it got a good review in the Guardian. Well boy were we let down. First off the staff were so blaise and completely ineffective. We just wanted to drop our bags off in our room and then venture out. When we arrived our room wasn't ready. When we came back two hours after we were suppose to check-in our room still was ready. Another hour later we went back, but couldn't find a member of staff so we tried our room. We couldn't tell if it had been clean because it was such a dingy little room. This was a hostel and NOT a hotel. The comforters were disgusting and the room was furnished with old Ikea furniture and our towels (when we got them) were thin and barely clean.

The toilet room was tiny (we went with the shared option) and the shower room was so disgusting we had to go out and buy flip-flops. There were hairs and mildew everywhere and the drain was clogged. We felt dirty after taking a shower.

We were also on the top floor and the staircase was so steep and narrow I had to hold onto the railing to keep from falling down.

We only went to breakfast once because it was so bad. There was a toaster at our table and a miserable woman slapped a plate on our table without saying anything. The staff here were horrible!! The breakfast was appalling.

We never bothered to rent a bike because it rained the entire time we were there and well we didn't want to deal with the staff.

Please don't stay here if you want a nice trip. We wanted to move after our first night but we stupidly paid up front.

“Great value and friendly staff”

Actually I stayed at this hotel in June 2009, but just now got around to writing the review. The staff were friendly, very helpful with info etc. The rooms are basic but pleasant have everything you need. The price is reasonable and the location is great - close to tram lines and within walking distance of many Amsterdam sites. I'd stay there again!

“Hostel Conditions at Hotel Prices”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2010

My wife and I loved our time in Amsterdam. Unfortunately, however, we paid $115 euros per night for a private room at the Bicycle Hotel--a room that was equivalent to that normally found at a hostel that would charge half that amount. There was no room service whatsoever, no decor whatsoever, old/thin towels, a tiny television from the 80's, and furniture that appeared to have been picked up at a yard sale. On the plus side, wi-fi was free and a free continental breakfast was included. Also, the place was generally quiet, the rooms were clean, the location was a little off the beaten path (but not too bad) and the folks working there couldn't have been nicer. (Fair warning: They don't tell you this when you book your reservation, but if you pay with a credit card, they charge you four percent extra. Not cool.)
