The rooms in the place feel like prison dorms. There are no individual lights, nor anywhere to store things (such as phones) near the actual beds. There are few power sockets which causes a problem. On the plus side, the lockers are very spacious and are just outside the rooms.
The bathrooms are small a bit dodgy, but are clean enough. The breakfasts are very nice and the fact that they are included in the price is fantastic. Using the laundry is a rip-off - it costs 7.5 euro for a wash and dry. Seriously.

The staff make up for the short comings of this place, they are super friendly and helpful. The location is also fantastic, just across the road from the university and a few minutes walk to everything. It takes about 15 minutes to walk from Centraal station and is really easy to find. The lounge is nice and the free wifi seems to work everywhere.

Went as a group of 8 and paid the cheapest price (for a mixed dorm of 20) but got a dorm of 8 to ourselves.
Reception was friendly and reasonably helpful; beds were comfortable with colourful sheets; breakfast was satisfactory (bread - not toast - cheese, ham, chicken, jams, cereal, coffee, orange juice); bathrooms were okay - slightly soggy floors.
The location is of course excellent and I definitely recommend it for a trip to Amsterdam with friends. There is a no drink or drugs policy in the hostel, which makes it feel quite safe.

Stayed here for 2 nights in October 2011, was bitten by bed bugs both nights.
The chill out area is directly in front of the front desk and the staff bang around like they are angry that you are there.
It is handy to town though and it was super cheap which is what we were after.
We were in a 20 bed mixed dorm which was surprisingly quiet considering, I think being in a mixed dorm the men tend to behave.

Stayed here for 2 nights. Location was close to Dam Square and it is only a couple of stops away from the main train station. Stayed in a room of 16 beds but it was quite spacious for me. However, there were only a couple of outlets in each room so we had to take turns plugging our laptops/cellphones. Locker provided was spacious too although lockers were located outside the bedroom. Breakfast was plenty and decent. Bathrooms were sometimes decent but sometimes gross.
