“I don't understand the bad reviews”

I would like to start by saying that the reviews which provide horrible details of this hostel were misleading and freaked me out prior to travel. To those who read such reviews, I hope I can provide a comprehensive explanation of what the hostel is like. I am a higher class backpacker and a hygiene freak, so I do have high standards.

The hostel provides an atmosphere of exactly what it advertised, the Amsterdam party vibe but a bit more low key than the downtown hostel. They provided tours of the city, and there was always people willing to adventure Amsterdam streets with you if you just say hi with a smile. I hung out with guests and staff, definetly making some friends for life. I just entered the bar or smoking room and someone would be up for an adventure or conversation.

Every bed has a locker with it, I suggest using this! Although the majority of guests were highly trust worthy, you ARE staying in a hostel with hundreds of people going through it regularly, so your belongings are never entirely safe unless locked up and hidden or on your persons.

The beds were not amazing, but unless your expecting a hotel, they are fine and I slept like a baby (I am a light sleeper). I dormed on the top floor in a 3 person dorm, I highly recommend forking out the extra 10-12 euros for one of these rooms if possible, you will sleep better and feel safer. Although in saying that, the people I met in the larger dorms on the lower floors said they slept ok, but at the end of the day it is a party Hostel.

The hostel was very clean overall and the staff definetly worked hard to upkeep that. The negative reviews that give 1 star due "missed waste" in the toilet dont make sense to me. Firstly, the toilets were immaculate when I used them; secondly, that is the fault of the guests who stayed there, not the staff (who will clean up a toilet if you ask).

Many review complain of many stairs, small bathrooms and small toilets. I lived in Amsterdam for over a decade growing up, and trust me, they are normal Dutch sized toilets and stairs. If you have an issue with this, I suggest you reconsider visiting Amsterdam as your travel destination as Amsterdam is not known as a place with a lot of space to spare.

Overall I was very happy with my stay and am planning to come back soon. It is safe and clean Hostel, my only incident being some of my stationary was stolen by a room mate, but I left it on the floor near the door. I loved it, and I don't at understand these bad review. Good luck and happy traveling.

“Awesome Hostel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

This hostel had the coolest vibe of any hostel I´ve ever been to! I think the only thing I didn´t like about it were the stairs one had to climb to get to ones room. But other then that, it was awesome! The Bar downstairs made it really easy to meet people, which for a person traveling solo is very important. The staff was helpful and friendly, though they did seem to take forever to do anything. The beds were comfortable, the location was quiet. The bathrooms got a little grody towards the end of the nights, but they were always cleaned promptly the next morning. The showers seemed to flood a little bit. I stayed there a total of 4 nights.

Room Tip: pick something on on the lower floors if at all possible... the stairs are no bueno.

“Great value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

For value for money, you can't really beat this place - Especially since my friend had a discount card that he got from a sister hostel in Belgium.

Its website gives a pretty accurate depiction of the hostel, a vibrant, atmospheric place where you have come to experience the city and have fun. Definitely a place for backpackers or students such as myself.

The Hostel comes with a bar and smoking room which is great for cheap drinks before or after going out to town with good, friendly service although the smoking room was always crammed full of people with little table space for placing drinks. As I was mostly out of the hostel this was no problem.

It may not be the most clean hostel I have been to and this may put off some people however the showers were fine and all the utilities worked.

Me and my friends shared a large mixed dorm and had no problems, the reading lights didn't work but this was perhaps a good thing to save others from leaving lights on all night. Again, this is more suitable for the care-free as my friend had the unfortunate pleasure of getting woken up from a couple on the adjacent bed in the morning. Breakfast was available in the morning of rolls, bread and condiments which is more than some hotels offer.

The location was excellent, right next to VondelPark in a quiet area so you avoid those on a night out in the centre of town. Everything is within walking distance, including the train station so you don't even need to pay for trams.

Would definitely come back to this hostel if I were to return to Amsterdam!

“Not what i expected”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2011

read great reviews about this place and decided to stay here. The rooms were pretty packed and they have queen size bunk beds, which is weird coz 2 people have to share a bed....
The stairs were super narrow and only person could use them at a time. After one night, they made us shift to another room for some reason. The bar/common room area was pretty small and nowhere near big enough for the number of people who stayed there. On the positive side - it was clean and the staff were alright and it was really close to Leidesplein; the bar and nightlife area.

“Hell Hole”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2011

Went to Amsterdam and decided to take flying pig uptown due to its great location and great price. But dont be fooled by the prices and good reviews as the condition expected were so far off, i could only describe it as hell holes.

Firstly is the kitchen of this hostel which is too small to accommodate hundreds of people staying there. Forget about cooking there as there will be few dozens people trying to fight their way to cook as well. Furthermore, the kitchen utensil are absolute horror as some were spoiled.

Secondly, the stairs were too small to fit.

Thirdly, the bed was absolute disgrace to hostel industry as you can sit up straight and with no individual bed lights to make night time private reading impossible.

Conclusion: STAY OUT OF THIS PLACE. DOESNT WORTH THE MONEY EVEN IF ITS DIRT CHEAP. F`king disgrace!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: stay out of this hell hole.
