We booked this hotel on the advice of a friend, who obviously stayed there before the new owners took over in 2005, and it appears this hotel has not been maintained at all since then. From the outside, the hotel looks like a cheap hostel, and the inside isn't any better. Our room was dirty, with stains in the carpet and cigarette burns on the ancient vinyl armchair, and it was deemed a 'triple room' by the addition of a cot in the sitting area. The actual bed was practically on the floor, and both the bed and the cot were lumpy and uncomfortable. Worst of all, these were both infected with bedbugs! We woke up with bites all over us. The room was hot, even though the weather outside was pleasantly cool, and we couldn't open the windows because there were no screens to keep out the mosquitos, though they got in through the one window that wouldn't shut all the way. No one got a good night's sleep, and we cut our three nights down to two because the hotel was so repellent. We tried to get out of it completely, but couldn't get a refund for more than the third night and therefore couldn't afford to stay at another, nicer hotel (which we found down the street for almost the same price!). The breakfast was poor, and the breakfast room was dirty. The staff were icy and unhelpful upon our arrival, though they did warm up a bit later. The one bright spot was the bathroom, which looked like it belonged in a different hotel, it was so much nicer than the room. There were broken windows on the second floor, and while there was free internet, the wi-fi didn't reach our room (reception's answer: 'Yes, it only works near the lobby') and the computer for guest usage didn't have a keyboard (apparently, the keyboards keep getting stolen!), so we had to type by clicking on letters with the mouse. Since we were there on a Monday and Tuesday, the noise from the nightclub next door was not too disturbing, and the location was fairly central, but my one piece of advice is not to book this hotel! Don't let this hotel ruin your trip to Amsterdam!
