“Just back”

Just back from a great weekend in Amsterdam. Read the reviews before we went and have got to say most of them were spot on! Took other reviewers advice and asked for a room on the third floor. Was a really helpful receptionist on duty and she gave us room 309 Thank you Christina! It was great. Very warm - it was minus 10 outside- beds were very clean and the most comfortable I have slept in. It also had a lovely canal view and a very clean, modern bathroom. Also tried the breakfast it was great. Yes it is an old hotel and could do with a face-lift but it was excellent value for money and very central.

Room Tip: try to get second or third floor. We arrived early I think we got a better choice.

“Very good value for money”

When staying in Amsterdam I have normally used the Swissotel on Damrak but decided to give a cheaper hotel a go. This hotel also has an excellent location on Herengracht and I booked at a bargain price through hotels.com.

The room was reasonably set out and larger than I had expected with high ceilings and 17th century heavy beams visible. The furniture was clearly cheap but was in pretty good condition, so not a problem and the bathroom was good. Despite staying over some of the coldest nights of the year, the room was comfortably warm.

The one problem was that I could not register for the hotel's outsourced WiFi service. It consistently failed on the last step of the account creation process. Hotels ought to make Internet access part of their service, like providing towels or bed linen and not levy extra charges for it.

Room Tip: All rooms are non-smoking. I had a room overlooking the Herengracht and it had a lovely view and was...

“A very pleasant stay.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

My partner and I normally do a couple of mini cruises to Holland in the winter using P & O Ferries from Hull to Europoort & then onto Amsterdam for the day before reurning to the ship in the evening.
This time we decided to stay over for an extra night to sample the night life & I couldn't have picked a better hotel for its location, comfort and service. We checked in on Friday 20 January 2012 one & a half hours before we were due to and there was no quibble from the friendly receptionist. Room G25 was fatastically spacious with a walk in wardrobe and very modern en suite with a king size divan that could have slept 4. The main room itself was airy with a high ceiling beautifully plastered & painted, which gave the appearance of a drawing room. This room was at the rear of the hotel, which afforded us peace & quiet, though being canal-side I can't imagine anyone having problems at the front either.
The hotel has been given 3* status, which is well deserved. I booked the room for 71 Euros for the night and enjoyed a very tasty and varied breakfast for 8.50 Euros the morning after. The staff are courteous and efficient and the hospitality second to none. I would recommend this establishment to anyone & hope to do a return visit in the future.

“Good location, a bit of a shabby hotel though”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

If you need a clean bed for the night in the centre of Amsterdam and get a package deal, this is the ideal hotel for you. If you want anything more than that, I'd give this hotel a miss. It is situated perfectly in the centre of town, close to everything that you would want to go to (and that includes the shadier parts!), but the whole hotel is tired. Our room had badly plastered repairs to holes in the wall, a broken shower head that not only directed water at your feet, but didn't shut off the bath tap so you ended up taking a shower and ending up standing in a bath full of water. It would also be great if there was a room with a few sofas so you could sit down and relax rather than having to just go back to your room. Having said all this, the bed was clean, the staff friendly and helpful and we got a really good deal.

Stay at this hotel for the location in the city, but if you want anything else, look elsewhere.

Room Tip: Try get a room overlooking the canal

“Perfect for Us!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

We stayed one night - November 18, 2011.

I was a bit nervous after booking this hotel for my boyfriend and I, because of some mixed reviews on this site, but after we arrived, I realized I'd made the right decision.

It was one of few hotels that allowed only one night's stay. I booked the room for only 74 euros.

10-15 minute walk to Amsterdam Centraal Station. In the middle of the negen straatjes! Great shopping area.

The room was a good size, not huge, but bigger than we needed. The hallways definitely smelled like marijuana, but to be honest, it didn't bother either of us. It's to be expected in the city. Our room was non-smoking and there was no smell inside. Linens were crisp and clean. The bathroom was nice, and a few toiletries were provided. There was a TV (although we never turned it on). And best of all, when we got into our room, we opened a window/door to discover that we had a small balcony! After we walked onto it, we realized that we were lucky enough to get the only balcony in the hotel, and as far as we could tell, the only one on the street.

They safely stored our bags after we checked out the next day, free of charge.

Room Tip: Great view canal side. We had room 101, with the balcony!
