We stayed at Hotel Orlando for 4 nights at the end of April. The hotel is well located in a slightly less touristy area of Amsterdam, but it was still convenient to walk to all the major tourist attractions (if you don't mind a bit of walking). We even walked from the main train station to the hotel with our luggage on the first day - it's doable, but I'd recommend catching the tram (it's a fair walk and took about 20 mins).
Our room was on the ground floor, along the hallway. It was spacious and quiet and the beds were large and comfortable. The room was very clean, except for the TV cabinet, which was super dusty! Breakfast was above average and ample - fresh orange juice, ham, cheese, croissant, yoghurt, fresh fruit.
The service was good - I can't remember her name, but the lady who served us each morning was very friendly and helpful and spoke perfect English. They were happy to let us use their computer and printer for internet banking, printing entry tickets, etc.
Tips:
- we're young and fairly fit, but I'm glad we didn't book a room upstairs as it would've been a massive struggle to get our luggage up the narrow, steep stairs (although, I'm not sure if they are able to lift your luggage up for you from the outside through the window);
- there is a Spanish tapa restaurant nearby, Patta Negra (http://www.pata-negra.nl/), that was very good; and
- a trip down the canals with the St Nicholaas Boat Club (http://amsterdamboatclub.com/) was a highlight!
