The booking process was hassle-free and check in went well. We were pointed in the direction of our first room, which was of a twin bunk arrangement, at the top of the building - no windows, room to swing a cat, or a toilet/shower on the same floor, but hey I thought, it's Amsterdam, and you get what you pay for. Chill. Later in our stay I realised I should have been very pleased not sleeping on a floor with the ablutions nearby - the stench was incredible.
So on the first night, relatively happily checked in, my boyfriend and I went out to explore the local nightlife and found some great restaurants and cafes nearby. We came back around 3am, crawled into our twee seperate bunks and nodded off. For about 10 minutes.
Neither of us wanted to admit it, but the matresses were crawling. With the light back on there was absolutely no question: We, our clothes and the beds were covered in bed-bugs. I was covered in bites. At 4am we collared someone, a cleaner perhaps, who was really helpful and found us another room. Not sure if it had bugs too, but judging from the wealth of bites I had, I'd bet on it.
In the morning, the hotel manager didn't want to admit to the problem either and after nearly 15 minutes of weird mumbling and talking on the phone placed a 20 euro refund on the counter, without apology, and handed us the keys to another different room for our second night of stay. We'd paid around 60 euros for the room on the first night and 100 euros for the second but were too tired to argue, or consider looking for another hotel.
Breakfast was bleak - exactly what it says on the tin though - eggs (hard boiled), bread, juice, tea and coffee. An basic collection of spreads on the few tables in the reception area. We found the toaster in another room as we were checking out. That probably would have improved things! The food's great in Amsterdam so I didn't fill up on this stuff - you're better to go to the bakery down the road.
Our final night was noisy and uncomfortable - my bites were irritated and the (now third) mattress I slept on was really thin. The manager offered to look after our bags after check out but we weren't keen on what might happen to them! The 'luggage room' was just the kitchen and didn't have a lock on the door.
So...not highly reccommended at all. Unless you want to mess up someone's weekend.
