“nice place but a few cautions”

this B&B was very difficult to find. though it was located close to amsterdam centraal station, this area is residential area, hence there is no landmark around. and top of that, this B&B doesnt have any sign of its name outside so if you dont have an address with you, you'll never get there.
about the building itself, as other people have already pointed it out, stairs are very narrow and steep. very dangerous to bring children.
we had big and heavy suitcases with us, and carrying them to our room was the toughest work during our stay in the city.
and one more thing, as is often the case with old buildings, doors and keys are problem.
we couldnt lock the door of our room with a given key so we gave it up and let the door open all the time.

“BAD BUSINESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2010

Booked this hotel through booking.com as a last minute booking to allow us to bring our dog to Amsterdam with us in a home-like environment because it stated that "PETS ARE ALLOWED" It didn't state "PETS ARE ALLOWED WITH ALL OF THESE STIPULATIONS". Little did I know that "Pets allowed" would result in such a mess. The owner sent the below email once he received our information which NONE of these stipulations are on the booking.com website. Needless to say, these "requirements" are not even feasible. If I can't leave the dog in the room, but he can't come to the dining area, where is he suppose to go and why am I paying for a bed and breakfast....This owner charged us for the entire stay even though none of this information was available before the reservation was made and I informed him that I did not want to keep the reservation due to the crazy stipulations. I will not be using booking.com again and definitely would not recommend this B&B due to poor business practices.

*****ALSO, BOOKING.COM WOULD NOT HELP WITH THE SITUATION BECAUSE THEY SAID THAT THE B&B POLICIES ARE ON THE WEBSITE "PETS ARE AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST". HOWEVER, I BOOKED THIS HOTEL BECAUSE PETS ARE ALLOWED AND I FEEL THAT THE REQUIREMENTS FOR BRINGING A PET SHOULD BE MORE DESCRIPTIVE IN THIS CASE BECAUSE THIS IS DEFINITELY A DETERENT TO BRINGING A PET TO THIS ESTABLISHMENT.

From Mr. Bourdin:

We have just received a reservation from you through the website of www.booking.com
In your reservation you have indicated that you will bring a dog with you.

Your dog is welcome on the next conditions:

price € 15 per night
the dog can not be left alone in your room
you need to bring his own sleeping cot
he is not allowed in the main kitchen, on the couch or on your bed
damage caused will be entirely your responsibility

You need also too know that we have our own dog in the house. So hopefully they will get along with each other.

English Bulldogs are normally sweet and easy going so I don’t believe this will cause any problem.

If you want to proceed with your reservation then please let me know.
I will then send you a confirmation from our side.

“Beautiful old building, dangerous Dutch stairs”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 May 2010

Location: B&B situated app 700-800 m from the Centraal Station in Amsterdam, in a truly beautiful 17th c. Dutch house in a nice quiet street overlooking one of the canals. 5-10 min walk to the Nieuwmarkt or 15-20 min walk to the Dam where you can catch several tram lines.
Cleanliness: Quite ok
Service: OK, but nothing more. There was virtually no sign or plaque indicating that this is a B&B, at first I thought I got the wrong address. There was no one to open the door on my arrival (they were informed of my arrival time in advance) so luckily I managed to find the owner's cell no. in my bag. After I explained that I'm standing in front of the door he came by in a matter of minutes and fortunately offered to carry my bag over 3 or 4 flights of very steep stairs. I'm really not sure that I'd managed to carry it myself (the bag was modest size and weight but the stairs are 'traditional' Dutch, meaning really really steep). The room was big but the beds weren’t overly comfortable, they were ok.
Although common areas are very nice and beautifully decorated, the room furniture is a bit on the cheap side. WC (without hand washing basin) was shared by two rooms, while the bathroom (one floor below) was shared by several rooms which sometimes made it hard to access (especially in the mornings). Aside from being steep, the stairs were also very noisy so you really couldn't help hearing late arrivals or early birds up and down the stairs.
On our last day before we checked-out, I was quite disappointed to discover that there were absolutely no possibilities for luggage storage although the booking site through which a reservation was made lists Luggage Storage as one of the hotel facilities. As I had a late flight there was no other option but to sit in a close by restaurant garden for 3-4 hours before heading out to the airport. That kind of ruined my last day in Amsterdam and I'm sure wouldn't be that complicated to arrange. Also, being a smoker (not very popular I know) I specifically looked for accommodation that would at least have a designated smoking area on the property, and again on the booking site, under Hotel Facilities it lists: Designated Smoking Area. And you’re guessing – there’s no designated smoking area in this B&B. Regardless of whose fault these non-existing facilities are (the booking site or the owner) it would be nice to make an effort and correct them so that one can plan accordingly.
PS They have the friendliest cutest dog that just loves being pet.

“NICE”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 March 2010

We loved very much this cosy B&B on the canal in the center of the city, full of old genuine atmosphere we always look for when travelling! The owner has been friendly and made us feel at home. The only negative thing was that from your room you could hear everything going on in the house(the building dates back to the 17th century)It's worth the stay, however.

“Clean, cool place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2009

My wife and I had a great stay at De Baronie. The rooms are large and airy, we stayed twice and both rooms had a great view of the Canal. The windows opened which helped us regulate the room temp. Beautiful house with some great common areas. Tuhami is a great host, he helped us out with coffee the first morning and was very helpful. We will definitely stay again.
