We stayed with a company called AWA Amsterdam Youth Hostel Inn, rather than AAE etc. but they have the same address so I think this review will be relevant. My boyfriend and I stayed for five days here in a double room and the whole place is grotty and run down. I think the guy who reviewed and loved it must have been reviewing the wrong place because there is no reception, or dining area. We were picked up by one of the people working there from a snack bar near Oosterpark in the evening because we could only check in past six pm, and taken down the road to one of the houses, so there's no communal area that you would expect with a hostel, just a house that's been converted to get as many tiny rooms into a floor as possible.
We had a double room and it was miniscule, just a bed and a foot of space to the left of it, a table with a tv on at the foot of the bed and the bathroom. No wardrobe or anywhere to put anything, not even a shelf in the bathroom to put toothbrushes and things so you had to balance it along the sink or on the toilet cistern. The place was filthy as well, weird stains on the walls and mattress, which was actually grey, and blood stains on the sheets. Instead of a curtain we had a moulding bed sheet that had to be pushed into the crack along the top of the window frame to keep it up, and the window was broken, as was the toilet seat and bathroom mirror. The shower curtain had serious mould on it, and looked like it should have been replaced sometime last year, but also didn't reach the bottom of the shower so it failed its sole purpose of preventing the bathroom floor from swimming with water. With two people in the room, trying to do anything like getting changed involved a lot of shuffling around one another and one having to sit on the bed whilst the other changed because there wasn't room for both to move about.
There were about five rooms on the floor we were on, I don't know if there were others in the building, but any sound was amplified in the small corridor so if people came in at two in the morning, and started talking, you'd know about it.
So, in summary it's cheap with us each spending about £95 each for five days, and the location itself is fine, but if you don't like slumming it don't stay here.
