“Fantastic...most comfortable place I have stayed in Amsterdam.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 March 2011

This was my 3rd trip to Amsterdam and, after staying in quite low quality hotels the previous times, we were pleasantly surprised at how much better our accommodation was this time for only slightly more money. The owner Maya met us at our arrival and was very helpful in showing us round our room.
The room itself was extremely clean and tidy as well as the kitchen. We had a table containing bongs, grinders, etc so it was very smoker friendly.
The only downside was the stairs which were probably the steepest I have ever witnessed but pretty much everywhere in Amsterdam has a similar issue.
The Flying Monkey is the perfect place to stay if your going to Amsterdam for a good weekend.

Hi.

I am an owner of Flying Monkey and I wanted to post this so that it was clear to others reading. I was never notified about the ants, my property manager was. She said that she sprayed the area and said to let her know if they become a problem. But she also said that she can't make them disappear.

As for the stairs and the luggage assistance - this information is all made clear in your confirmation email and on every booking site that we list on. The stairs are REALLY steep and narrow.. very true and it does take an effort to manage the first few times.

Too bad you had a mediocre experience with us, hopefully your next Amsterdam trip will be better and thank you for the review.

cheers
lina

“Excellent Location & Friendly Staff :)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2010

Me & my friends stayed at the Flying Monkey for 3 nights the reason four our trip was purely leisure and to attend Pinkpop Festival in Landgraaf whilst visiting Amsterdam as well. It was my 3rd time in Amsterdam and I still find this city great as ever! The Flying Monkey is situated opposite the Central Staiton, and one street Away from the Red Light Dsitrict. Altough it has such a central Location it is located in a relatively quite street away from all the chaos the Red Light District is notorious for. The Price was reasonable, we had One room with the beds and a kitchenette and another room which was the bathroom. Considering that we were a group of friends we didn't need anything else but I doubt that it would be a proper accomodation for more mature people. I especially recommend this apartment for people who like smoking since it's a smoking friendly apartment. The Owner/Manager I don't know exactly her role who's name is Maya is very friendly and Helpful which unfortunately such attitude doesn't reflect all the Dutch People :/ . Anyway overall I had a very good experience at the flying monkey and I wouldn't hesitate to go back again and to reccommend it to a friend :)

“Perfect, but was ruined by...”

The Flying Monkey was perfect in all respects bar one important, and for me vital factor.
I stayed with a group of friends in Amsterdam, the location was excelent - a key was provided for both doors so no curfu, the apartment rooms were spacious, furnished, DVD's provided avd the fridge semi-stocked with nick-nacks from travellers of previous visits.

Our party never stayed much in the apartment for obvious reasons - we were about and out in Amsterdam! So throughout the whole trip we thought that the Flying Monkey gave us everything we needed, an excellently located, spacious, clean, private place to crash. The stairs, while being typical of Amsterdam architecture (about 70 degree slope!) would have been the only downside, and even that was not an issue!

The landlady was lovely, waiting paitently for us to arrive even though we took a few hours extra because we got on the wrong train from the airport.

The problems only started once we left, on the plane home (we stayed 3 nights) every one of us became covered with flee-bites. One or two were popping up during our trip but to be honest i think we were too stoned to care. On the way back home everyone started to itch, and I can't over estimate how badley we were all covered with these flee-bites! I enclose a picture of one side of my face - check it out. The rest of my body was worse. On day two we assumed it must be some kind of mosquito (in Northern Europe? Stoned!) but after the last night we came to the unamious decision that it was the beds, the sheets and mattresses.

Because the apartment was so good, the landlady so inviting, the location so excelent, I am very reluctant to write this and give the Flying Monkey such a low rating. We got the impression that the landlady, after returning our deposit and satisfying herself that the room was reletivly clean, would leave it as we left it for the next batch of travellers - however it is very important that somone running that kind of business clean the sheets after every visit! Now I cant help but wonder how many sweaty and dirty travelers have slept in that bed I used before I got there - and I dread to think what some of them got up to.

Everything would have been perfect, but the flee-infested beds really knocked it.
