Stayed for two nights over last weekend whilst visiting local friends and family. Liked the location and despite its proximity to the town centre and rail station it was a little oasis of calm. The woodland setting and lake was very good. We booked an executive premium room which was nicely appointed, spacious although a little dated in design. It lacked a few modern touches and attention to detail such as no in-room safe, bulbs not working, only two teabags in the amenity tin, damp sugar sachets, an old TV and radio/alarm clock that looked about 20 years old.
The lounge area was comfortable but lacked any atmosphere and service was a little slow despite only few residents being present. Returned to hotel at about 10.30pm one evening and the lounge was cold and staff nowhere to be seen. We were looking forward to a 'nightcap' but decided not to. Dont see why we have go to find the staff. Got to our room and were hungry and called room service after looking the in-room guide which states 24hour room service. Called at 10.40 only to be told that "we dont have 24 hour room service but we can make you a few sandwiches" which we agreed to order. They arrived promptly but were a couple of 'door steps' and not what you would expect from a hotel of this quality. We left most of the food on the plate.
Check out was efficient and taxis arrived on time. Overall impression was OK but just lacked that 'sparkle' and attention to detail. We notice that some hotels that have lovely settings and good views often give the impression that they don't have to try too hard and our stay at this hotel gave us that feeling. I think we would go back, only just.
